Balthazar, the Bastards thief, met Erika, a homicide detective, when Balthazar was trying to track down the Book of Spells that a collector had. That was in another book. He scrubbed her memory. But he hasn't forgotten her. And she is intrigued with a video of him. Long, long, long story short, they meet, nearly die, and fall in love. Devina, who possessed Balthazar, is involved. It's your typical JR Ward love story. Good, but not great.

Devina is looking for her one true love and he is, in her words, "Holy…fu@k." I won't spoil who he is here.

There's a crucial story of Nate and Rahvyn.

But the real star of the book, as far as I'm concerned, is Lassiter. He's the reason I gave the book 5*s. There's so much depth to him, so much heartbreak, so much sacrifice. I can't wait for his book.

Honestly, I wanted to love it so much, because this series is one of my favourite things ever written but recently, the past like 5 BDB books just aren't no where near as good as the first 1-15. I was very disappointed with this one, the way it was written, how rushed it seemed but also so boring at the same time. I hate Devina, that needs no explanation, but she is just so unnecessary sometimes. She's not even a good antagonist, just an annoying one. I'm really not a fan of Rahvyn either, she kind of screwed Nate over and I'm just not a fan of her whole persona. Not looking forward to Lassiter's book and the inevitable love-triangle that will come. Nate is such a sweet character and I just really don't trust Rahvyn. Lassiter is so ruined from how he was in the earlier books, we've kind of lost him. It was nice that V for once was not acting like a dick. Would have loved to have seen just more interaction between all the brothers/shellans, but again, it felt all very rushed and disjointed. Not great.

This book is essentially a prequel to Lassiter's book. I read this book when it first came out, but I didn't really remember anything. The main couple are not Ward's best work. The side characters and Lassiter's story are the reason to read this book.

I'm super excited to start Lassiter's book, because I know it's going to be a rough ride emotionally and otherwise.
