I found this one really hard emotionally, but the ending really brought it all together!

This book was very well written and an engaging story with a lot of heart. However there were some triggering storylines and overall was too depressing of a story for me to want to continue. I have too many other books to enjoy. I read a synopsis and moved on.

Some points hard to listen to; existence was hard for a long time. Beautiful story of humanity with a hopeful ending. I want to paint some of the images from the story!

A great historical fiction that brings light to both the pack-horse library project and the blue skinned people of Kentucky. I wasn't familiar with either until reading this book. I loved the focus on the rural people who didn't have much (trigger warning for starvation and death) along with the racism and prejudice and the working conditions of the miners. I do think some of the storylines got left behind a little. I wish the miners and the union had been wrapped up more satisfactory. I also think the story would have been better, either without the romance aspect or with more development of it throughout the story. Normally, because of those things, I would have dropped my rating, but the main subject of the story, along with the characters the book woman impacted, held up the higher rating. I also loved the stubborn mule.

I am a librarian, and I so enjoyed reading historical fiction about the WPA's packhorse librarian project. I also enjoyed learning about the blue people of Kentucky as I had never heard of them.
