Simplicity. Illustrates the aspects of meditation so beautifully, in a reader friendly format. Perfect for those struggling to find peace in modern life.

3.5 rounded up to 4. I was interested in reading about Buddhism and couldn’t get a hold of the main book I wanted, so I tried this one. It was more relatable than I expected, with short, poignant quotes in each chapter pertaining to rest, mindfulness, passion, relationships, love, life, the future, and spirituality. I particularly liked the “When You Look For Your Calling” chapter.

I thought it was interesting that Sumin, a Seon Buddhist teacher, often referenced Jesus, The Bible, and religious issues. Hopefully these references remind people of all religions that they can learn about/relate to the Buddhist philosophy and that “to know one religion is to know none.”

There are many more ordinary hours in life than extraordinary ones. We wait in line at the supermarket, we spend hours commuting to work, we water our plants and feed our pets. Happiness means finding a moment of joy in those ordinary hours.”

The most frequently asked question is how to deal with strong negative emotions such as anger, hatred, and jealousy. The good news is that those raising this question are already halfway there. The fact that they are asking the question indicated that they are mindful enough to notice the negative state of their own mind, which is not an easy thing to do. Most people are completely absorbed in their emotions and have limited self-awareness.

“If you have developed critical intelligence but neglected emotional intelligence,
then you may not be sensitive to the suffering of others.
If you have developed emotional intelligence but neglected spiritual intelligence,
then you may lose hope after seeing the world's
suffering
If you have developed spiritual intelligence but neglected critical intelligence,
then you may fall victim to the abuse of a cult”.

“I realized that Truth is not the exclusive property of any one religion. It has a universal quality that allows people of different religious traditions to recognize and respect it”.

“He complains about her behind her back.
She, without knowing anything, approaches him and says the kindest words.
The best revenge is love”.

“If I had to summarize the entirety of an enlightened person's life in a few words, it would be complete acceptance of what is.
As we accept what is, our minds are relaxed and composed
while the world changes rapidly around us”.

This book was a very refreshing read. It felt more like a book of advise from an experienced person rather than a monk. The illustrations were beautiful and I think I will get back to this book again and again when life gets too challenging.
