Talk about having mixed feelings! On the one hand I commend Rum for her attempt to talk about the culture of misogyny and violence towards women in a conservative Arab family and community. A brave thing to do. On the other hand, I felt the subject matter deserved a more nuanced telling and the writing, especially the dialogue, needed a lot more work. So I was ultimately disappointed by this debut sadly.

It was so good but also so very sad. Being an outsider and not coming from the culture or a full understanding of why the way it is, I felt myself being very judgy and thinking "just leave, you don't have to put up with it, etc." My heart goes out to the daughters they left behind, to the mom who was barely an adult when she had them, for the grandma who also had her own suffering and thought she was doing the best for her grandkids. I don't want be judgmental but I know that this is still very much a problem in the world. Can't help but wonder what life is like for Arab/Muslim women that I pass by everyday.
