Absolutely loved book 2! Edin is, so far, my favorite monster. He’s so funny and lovable, but also hot as hell and so Dominant. The sex scenes are some of the best I’ve ever read, with the perfect mix of sweet moments and erotic descriptions. Hunter is also a very lovable guy, so loyal and brave. I loved getting to see his inner conflicts throughout the book. I also love the representation of Hunter being an amputee. I’m not an expert but it seems like the author did her research about prosthetics, and amputees in general. I really hope Hunter and Edin pop back up in other books because so far they’re my favorite couple!

This book was even worse than the first one. I was marginally hopeful that the author would have explored the world and built it up a bit better. But they didn't. It remained flat, unexplained, and unexplored.

We got to see the main characters from the first book and they were written so differently it was hard to believe that they were even the same ones. There was no similarities. The three characters that were the focus of this book remained dull and two-dimensional. Edin, I had hopes for. There were teases in the first book that made me genuinely believe they would be fleshed out better in this book. They were not.

I can suspend a lot of belief when I read fantasy but typically not about real world situations. The main characters has a prostetic leg and I wish that the author had done more research about the care and needs a person with a prostethis has.

More research and better editing would have done this book wonders. I know this is a series but I'm not certain that I can keep reading the books. I have very little hope of them getting any better.

“Thanks for not letting me do anything stupid.”
Edin grinned at me, gently squeezing the nape of my neck. “I’m getting good at it.”

In some ways, I enjoyed this book more than Soul Eater, in others, a bit less. Regardless, this was a pretty solid read with lots of fun and exciting moments. I really liked how much the setting got expanded here, with all sorts of new monster types introduced and concepts mentioned in the first book growing into bigger things. I also felt that the overall pacing and sense of purpose was much better here, likely because this time, the protagonist/narrator actually had a solid external goal. Speaking of the protagonist, I liked Hunter a lot. Yes, he's grumpy and surly, but I actually really, really like reading about unlikable people still getting to grow and learn and let themselves be happy. His inner conflict was also quite interesting to follow, and I adored how self-aware he was underneath all of his flaws. Also, I felt like his disability was handled pretty well.

Another thing I really liked was getting to see so much of Wyn and Danny. I expected a cameo or two, but they ended up such important participants of the entire plot, being there for most of the story, and it was so fun to observethem through someone else's eyes. I really like that found family vibe the entire gang developed: the long-standing friendship between Wyn and Edin, the tentative growing friendship between Danny and Hunter, the tension between Wyn and Hunter, the way Wyn and Danny continue to be just so good to each other and obviously aren't anywhere out of the honeymoon phase.

I think all of the above would have been even more enjoyable if most of the scenes were a bit tighter. Even though the overall pacing has improved, there were all those moments of meandering, like the same thing being repeated 2-3 times in random conversations, etc. The kind of thing that happens in real life all the time, sure, but when characters in a book keep talking that way, it stops feeling realistic/authentic and starts getting tiresome.

I also have to admit that Edin and Hunter just didn't make me ship them as hard as Wyn and Danny did. I enjoyed their dynamic, for sure, but I also found it kind of... bland? Perhaps if Edin opened up more, or let something slip to Hunter about his past run-ins with the military before learning that Hunter was actually military himself, that would have added a bit of spice to the relationship. (In the emotional sense, not sexual sense, obviously; there was plenty of it in the sexual sense :D) Perhaps there could be some other adjustments. Or quite possibly it's not at all about the books or the characters and quite simply a "me" thing.

Anyway, objectively this was a pretty fun read, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

Thought about rating it a tiny bit lower but I had a very fun time with this and might have enjoyed it a little less than I otherwise did because I had an awful migraine the entire time. But it also has me invested enough to read the entire thing while feeling like death because of said migraine, so that must mean something.

Hunter and Edin both aren't my favorites (I knew they wouldn't be going in) but I like their romance and dynamic and they're both very fun characters. Charlie also isn't my favorite and I'm not sure how I'll feel about his book.

Getting more of Danny and Wyn was wonderful. Especially when we got to see Wyn from a pov that wasn't Danny's (with Wyn being all cuddly over him). Mean, overprotective Wyn is a blessing upon this earth.

I continue to like the world this is set in, though I feel like I got less details on it this time around other than a handful of monster names and vague descriptions. It was good, though. I continue to like how this series handles the military.

I'm really interested in seeing more about Cat and feel like I know a little of how that's going to go. So that's exciting.

The next book in the series I'm very interested in, so that's also a plus.

I really enjoy the writing of this author and the world building of this series.

It was fun seeing a hardass asshole have to deal with a laid back kind guy. I think the story did begin to drag a bit after the big climax because there was a lot of repetition of story beats. But overall the book was nice to get through and I looked forward to the next in the series.

What a journey! I loved the evolution of hunter. He’s such a fiercely loyal guy and while he was so mistrusting at the start he couldn’t help but fall for edin once he started getting the feels. You can tell he’s a seasoned soldier and the difference between how he and Danny were written was very clear which was interesting. There was parts were I thought my heart would burst from the adrenaline and the worry from the tense situations but so glad I hung in there. Such an amazing second book to this series
