I absolutely loved this! I have no idea why it took me so long to read this. The creation myth of one of my favorite fictional worlds... what's not to love?

The story of Been and Luthien was beautiful and sad. The slow descent of the Noldor from corruption and lies was heartbreaking. And the overarching curse of the sons of Feanor was so great to read through!

I really don't want to be 'that guy', but I think I might have enjoyed this more that LotR...

i need to read the physical copy there is so much going on in this book it’s hard to follow with all the names and locations. because i was listening to this as an audio book, i was usually driving while listening to it, which was also not conducive to focusing on the names and locations either. i do plan on revisiting this after reading and annotating a physical copy.

the fact it took me almost a year to finish this really just shows how much i prefer watching tolkien over reading it... it's simply very boring to me, i'm sorry! (the hobbit is excluded from this; it is, in fact, his best book)

Holy hell, this was boring. I thought it was a story and it was not. It's a history textbook of a fictional world and it reads exactly like it. It is dry, it is dense, and it is boring. I tried, I really really tried to get interested in it but the way I get into books is through their characters and this was like: here's a name, she died of a broken heart because she was female so why not, or you can have this one who lost her mind, ripped off all her clothes and ran through the woods like you do or this guy, whose head gets cut off two pages after he's introduced. I usually go through all the extra bits too (and started off strong with the preface and letter) but I literally cannot make myself read even a single word more about this so sorry maps and index and appendix, I will not even be glancing at you because oh my God, do I not care.

It’s been a few years since I read this book, but I was in a Tolkien mood and felt the urge to dive in again. Although Tolkien’s writing style is not to everyone’s particular tastes, it is impossible to deny that this is an incredible work of literature. Tolkien created such an amazing and detailed world, and to truly get the depth of its development and complexity, this is a must read. Wonderful as always.

A remarkable history of Middle Earth. Makes the subsequent trilogy all the more meaningful.
