As previous reviewers have said, this isn't a great work of literature, but boy is it sure tasty and enjoyable! Gabaldon is an extraordinarily gifted story teller and her characters just seem to invade your life! I'm completely hooked and can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series as well as the TV version!

Not exactly the fantasy that I was looking for (light on the fantasy elements, heavy on the sexy times), but I'm interested in reading more about the Jacobite rebellions.

The first couple chapters of this book were really hard for me to get into. It was difficult to get through them and I didn't look forward to the rest of the book. However, when she ended up going back in time it became interesting and I barely put it down.

I liked the love story between them and the action all throughout that kept the story interesting.

I didn't like the start of it (it didn't start out too strong), how she had to choose between two very wonderful men (it would be easier if one of them was horrible lol), and I didn't really like how it ended either. I know it's a series that I will continue to read but it didn't resolve much because it just left it right where they basically started out. They're both on the run and no safer than they were before.

Despite what I didn't like I liked the book overall and I just adore their love story, it's very lovely. I will continue to read the rest of the series to see how it progresses.

Not my kind of book. Romance is fine in context, but I just am so meh about books that manipulate reason in order to justify an unlikely romance.

Disclaimer: To be fair, I think this was just not my type of book and that plenty of other people can and will continue enjoying it.

Moving on, I couldn't even get through this book. I managed to read 35% (ah, the age of the kindle) and then gave up, which is unusual for me. I've only ever given up reading one other book in my life, but as my mum told me when I mentioned how much I disliked this: "Life is too short to spend reading books you don't like", so I dropped it like the hottest potato I've ever held.

The feelings of irritation are still too fresh to write a proper review... so I'll have to just leave a fellow reader's review for more people to see, which I think properly encapsulates my feelings of dislike (plus it's hilariously written!): https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/15619079 .

I tried to read this just before the show first aired, but I don't think I made it past 50 pages or so. Which is understandable: I was a lot younger and this book is huge! Then, a few weeks ago I thrifted the first four books at a really good price, so I though I'd give them a second chance. I've seen all the season of the show and I've been wanting to rewatch them for quite some time now, but as I don't use any streaming platform at the moment, reading would have to do.

I was afraid the writing would be boring or hard to follow, as historical fiction in my opinion often is, but I was positively surprised! I really loved it, and read it surprisingly fast. It was probably easier because I was simultaneously replaying the show in my head, but still. I never got bored even though I already knew the story and thus there weren't a lot of surprises.

I genuinely loved this, but I think I still prefer the show. If not alone because of the casting, then because the show does a better job at creating the mood and atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands.

4,5 stars, maybe even 5 <3
