This is a great look at the life of a functioning addict who seemed to have everything under control. Lisa had a great family, friends, career, and social life all the while drowning in her alcohol and coke addiction. Very few people realized how bad off she was, and those who did were completely shut out of Lisa’s life whenever they mentioned it. I appreciated hearing about her childhood and how that sparked her addiction, but Lisa does not use that as an excuse or blame anyone but herself. Her story seems a bit too neatly wrapped, though: she goes to detox and AA meetings, but aside from having the urge to drink afterwards, she doesn’t detail any struggles she had after getting sober. Overall, this is an eye opening account of how addiction can plague even the most well-to-do people.

Tears, tears, tears. Lisa did an absolutely amazing job of communicating the thought process of a woman in the city struggling with alcohol. She’s relatable, real, and brings a lot of hope. Highly recommend.

An honest and powerful memoir by a NY lawyer turned legal marketer about her struggle with alcoholism and drug addiction. Audiobook was well done as well.

I really and truly think that anyone who’s watching a family member or friend struggle with addiction should read this book. I wish I’d known about it when my brother was still alive. I’ve never before read anything that SO enabled me to understand what it’s like to crave that next drink. To NEED that next drink. To not be able to wait until noon for that next drink. And to eventually not be able to get out of bed without first having a drink.

Lisa Smith is a remarkable woman with an incredible story of accomplishment and determination. I have such respect for her. ❤️

“Thanks to addiction I was desperate to be alone and I dreaded being alone.”

Girl Walks Out of a Bar was a hard and honest memoir of a high functioning addict. At times I felt frustrated and sad by Lisa’s choices, but that is the reality of addiction and depression.

This is a difficult book for me to review. I listened to the audiobook and it was just so hard to listen to her story. Parts felt like navel gazing while others were just like a train wreck! But, kudos to her for becoming sober.
