There's no doubt about it that Torey Hayden has a special touch when it comes to wounded children. One Child is Hayden's first published book about her work with children, she's gone on to write about several more.
Sheila was a 6 year old girl who landed in Torey's special class after abducting a 3 year old boy and setting him on fire. Hayden never has found out why Sheila did it. One can assume, after reading of Sheila's rough life, that her behavior was a response to her abuse. Through 5 months of work and attention Torey and her teacher assistants are able to help Sheila begin to heal and move forward. It is an incredible testimony to what love, patience, and perseverance can do for a person.
What I've like about Torey's books is that she makes the reader so interested in her kids that you want to know how they are doing now. She provides what info she can on them through her website. Here's the update on Sheila: http://www.torey-hayden.com/one_child.htm

I love this book and it's actually a reread for me. Torey is a very well written author and the way she makes the story flow and really gets you to feel for the characters shows that she is one of the best in this genre. I much preferred this over Cathy glass (who is a bit to blunt for me) and you can really tell the difference in weaving the story and just stating what happened. Obviously it is a true story and I feel terrible about what that poor girl had to go through but it was written in such a lovely way

'Underneath it all her marvelous core of joy and courage gleamed.' This was the book that got me into Special Education, and, as with all books of this subject matter, it only affects me more emotionally the older I get. Highly readable and a compulsive story, you'll fall in love with Sheila and adore Torey for her neverending love, patience and loyalty towards a child who survived the unspeakable.

I like Torey Hayden’s books and this is my favorite. Not just because of Sheila, the “one child,” but also the other children in that classroom, and its portrayal of what it’s like to work with emotionally disturbed children. I thought it was very honest about showing the frustration of trying to improve these children’s lives while they’re helplessly living with parents or others who act counterproductively toward these efforts; it certainly mirrored my experiences working with emotionally disturbed special ed kids.

Hard to review. The writing is fine, but I'm really on the fence about how appropriate it is to turn a particular child's misery into entertainment and profit even in the guise of a teacher's memoir. It's one thing to write a "how I helped this kid" book for other teachers or therapists to use, but Hayden's books aren't that, and that part of her work rubs me the wrong way.
At the same time, reading reviews and comments on Hayden's work it's clear that her books have inspired many people to have greater compassion for emotionally disturbed kids, and even to choose similar work for themselves as a result of having read her books as young people. Like the argument that keeping animals in zoos is a benefit to wild animals by making people care about them, there may be some benefit to her work that outweighs my reservations.
At another level, the book is a good resource for young therapists or social workers who wonder why there are so many rules around ethics in working with children today. There are so many things that Hayden and her colleagues were allowed to do that would be verboten today, and the sequel to this book, The Tiger's Child, gives insight into why.

I skimmed a few of the reviews and see some criticisms of how this case was handled - this book was written in 1980 so in all likelihood the case happened sometime in the 70s. It was quite a different time. I absolutely think that we would do things much differently now, including removing the child from the home very early, but this was still an interesting story.

Sheila - Kisah Luka Hati Seorang Gadis Kecil
Penulis : Torey Hayden

An unbelievable true story about a special-ed teacher and her student named Sheila, who has been emotionally and physically abused and has been "sentenced" to a state mental hospital at the age of 6!! It was gripping and a testament to the saying, "one person can make a difference."
