After the passing of her mother, Mary goes to live with her Aunt and Uncle in a disused, gloomy, mysterious inn. Mary's uncle is up to no good, and his wife is a nervous simpering doormat, catering to his every whim and roller-coaster moods. Mary wishes to save her aunt, who unfortunately is past the point of being saved. Mary makes some interesting and impetuous choices, which lead to suspenseful moments.

Daphne du Maurier fans won't be surprised to learn how much I enjoyed "Jamaica Inn". Atmospheric and foreboding, the story begins with Mary Yellan coming to Jamaica Inn to live with her aunt, Patience, and her husband, Joss Merlyn. Despite ominous warnings from the coach driver about nefarious goings on in the inn. Mary's misgivings begin almost immediately when she sees her how beaten down her once perky aunt is. Nothing is as she was led to expect. With no other family to fall back on and no way to get outside help, Mary must find out the truth of what is happening in Jamaica Inn, while protecting her aunt and herself.

du Maurier is a master of Gothic suspense. This story is a true classic. An excellent read and highly recommended.

After her mother dies and she loses the farm, Mary Yellan moves in with her aunt Patience and uncle Joss at the Jamaica Inn. Mary meets Joss's  brother Jem and the Vicar.  Something shady is going on at the Inn and Mary is going to find out what.  Overall, the  writing is beautiful, the story is good - I just could not connect, too slow until the last part (last 3 chapters went fast).

I picked up Jamaica Inn because Daphne du Maurier's book Rebecca is one my favorite books of all time. Unfortunately Jamaica Inn doesn't live up to its more popular sister. It's a gothic novel with some extremely dark themes including abuse and murder. Mary Yellan moves in with her aunt Patience and evil uncle Joss Merlyn at the Jamaica Inn. Mary meets several people during her stay, including Joss's friendlier brother Jem and the Vicar of Altarnun. I enjoyed Jem's character. He's such a sweetheart. Otherwise, I didn't really care much for the plot. I found myself nodding off sometimes while reading.
