Read Pucked series before this one!!  It makes it so much better!

Lavender and Kodiak have such an emotional and amazing story.  What happens when you meet your soul mate when you are too young to even recognize why you two are so intertwined.

2/5 ⭐️ Heavier than expected and then kinda dragging out and boring.
2/5 🌶️ There was some spice.. but I can’t quite remember it so it must not have impressed me.

This is not what I was expecting when I read the blurb. I anticipated what sounded like a darker bully enemies to lovers romance. But it’s more friends to forced enemies to lovers, not that it’s a bad thing. It was also a much heavier book than anticipated with Kodiak’s and Lavenders anxieties. That part wasn’t mentioned at all in the blurb, and was much more prominent focus throughout the entire book. I was rather annoyed that it took so long to find out what happened between them. I started become impatient very quickly. And everything was all built up into this big thing, and then the reveal was a bit anticlimactic.

Several times it felt like one of the MCs does something grossly out of character, like the thong bathing suit and riding a dildo in front of Kodiak. Kodiak seemed both confident and cool, calm and collected, but then also described as anxious as fuck and having meltdowns and freak outs.

The back and forth between Kodiak being her friend to hating her and being an asshole to her to loving her again just felt.. overdone? Idk, it’s seemed quite easy for him to be such a dick to her. Idk how to explain, but something about it didn’t really work for me.

Then after they get together, there are so many time jumps, making the last part of the book kinda boring. Everything is told to us, not shown. “I got offered an internship. We’re gonna move to New York. He graduated then we moved.” Felt like a rushed way to wrap things up.

When the author said this was going to be a YA angsty book, she wasn’t joking! Broke my heart before she put it back together again! I loved reading Lavender’s story and what an awesome and talented girl she is!

Lavender is the only daughter in Alex and Violet Waters’ family. She has two older brothers, Robbie and Maverick, and a twin, River. She suffered from anxiety disorder, so she was very shy, didn’t like talking with strangers, and when she was in scary situations, her panic took away her words, she could only shake. In the middle of panic attacks, of which she had many, there was darkness and monsters whirling in her mind. Thanks to the excellent care her parents gave her, she had resources, and her parents encouraged her creativity so she had an outlet. I loved the little girl with such a huge and loving heart and cried for the fears that crowded her mind so frequently.

“Everything scares me. Too much noise. Too many people. Especially too many people I don’t know. There are a few people and things that make me feel safe.”

Kodiak (Rook and Lainey’s son) suffered pretty much the same condition, except he controlled his anxiety better than Lavender. Because they understood each other so well, they formed a special bond, and they gave each other a special peace that not even River, Lavender’s twin, could give her. This caused rivalry between Kodiak and River. It also caused a strong and not very healthy co-dependence between them.

I loved the involvement of Kodiak and Lavender’s parents in their development and how they persevered helping them deal with their issues. After a six year separation, they are back together again, at college in Chicago, one hour away from their parents. Lavender is living with her brothers Maverick and River, and Kodiak is living three houses down the same street with her cousin BJ. The difference this time is that Kodiak is being hateful, insulting, and humiliating. He’s making Lavender’s life impossible and it’s testing all the controls she has had such a hard time attaining.

The story is turbulent and emotional. Kodiak’s bullying is so painful to watch, not only because it’s hurting Lavender but it’s also hurting him. Poor Lavender is overwhelmed by her brother’s protectiveness, their constant partying in the house, bringing chaos to a girl who needs quiet, and River’s emotional stress due to an unknown cause.

I loved the angst, loved all the cousins and brothers, and the parents! All the hockey players in the former hockey series, now older and wiser and parenting!! Violet is a star in this book, she’s so supporting of her daughter, full of wisdom and love for her damaged daughter. I laughed at the frequent mentions of her Super MC, the hero disguises that the kids mistook were for the bananas, and all the loving care between Alex and Violet.

I loved Lavender and Kodiak and their special connection. They have loved each other since they were little but they didn’t know how to deal with their feelings. Their anxiety caused a toxic relation they couldn’t handle, and it was beautiful to see how Lavender had grown into her strengths and turned into an accomplished young woman.

I loved every word and am so looking forward to the other kids’ stories! This is a yummy off shoot of the original hockey hunky players and I’m loving it!

“I want to take away every hurt I caused, but I don’t know how,” I admit.
She cups my face between her warm palms. “You can start by erasing all the little lies with truths.”

I love Helena Hunting's books, but this one I struggled to get through. There were just so many things that didn't make sense and even after the "big reveal" I felt underwhelmed.
