Sometimes the writing was hyperbolic, sometimes simplistic. But I loved the story of this woman.

The mentions of domestic abuse are not gratuitous. They are matter-of-fact as part of the history of Emma Gatewood’s life. There is one spot where the author said that she could, “give as good as she got” and that really pissed me off at the author. But otherwise, the domestic abuse stuff didn’t make me as mad as it normally does, probably because it wasn’t dwelled on.kvmeehan's review against another edition
As other reviews have noted, it's an interesting story that could be better told with far fewer tangents and gory details about the main character's past abusive relationship. 50% of the way through the book, I lost interest, in a sort of, 'I get it, I get it,' way. It would have made a better long feature magazine article, than a full length book.

I freaking LOVED this book. Like what a bad ass little grandma, who changed (and in many ways saved) the Appalachian Trail without even trying. Makes me wanna get some boots & a pack to head off on that 2000 mile hike myself!!
