As the first Star Wars book I read, this novel has a special place in my heart. Despite this bias, the character development of Qui-Gon Jin and Obi-Wan Kenobi was excellent, even if the plot was a little slow at some points.
Highlights:
- Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan both feeling as of they have failed each other
- Explanation of Qui-Gon's obsession with Anakin being the chosen one
- Backstory of Qui-Gon as Dooku's padawan
This book has changed my perception of Qui-Gon Jin for the better and I now watch The Phantom Menace in a new light.

in all honesty the book itself isn’t a 5* book but the audiobook is such an absolute BLAST. i had so much fun listening to it that i have to give it the full 5*

well, I'm disappointed. claudia gray has accustomed me to a certain kind of star wars book and this unfortunately wasn't it.

was it bad? absolutely not. was it mostly tedious? sadly, yes. the political plot almost put me to sleep. the insight into dooku's background and the beginning of qui-gon and obi-wan's relationship was amazing and that was what I was expecting most of the book to be about. but unfortunately, it isn't. nothing besides these two points got my interest. still, the last chapter got me deep in the feels and now I want to watch the prequels yet another time.

this reads as a very safe, disney-like redemption of a star wars story. and that was my main criticism of any star wars book not written by claudia gray. my least favorite of hers but definitely not the worst from the galaxy far far away

Really interesting to see more of the Master and Padawan dynamic Qui Gon and Kenobi had, especially because it wasn't very easy going for them. Also quite enjoyed the flashbacks and tidbits about Dooku as a Jedi and a Master.
The main plot in itself was pretty good as well, managing to be interesting on its own while also nurturing the conflict between the main characters.
Really good pre-prequel era novel!

It was ok as my first fandom novel. Neat to be submerged into the Star Wars world and delve deeper into details about characters you know and love already. Not gripping or anything but I’ll keep reading on.
