Incredible how much the author accomplishes in just over 300 dense pages. Finely weaves together the hard facts from endless sources and the rich, heartbreaking human lives that contribute to those statistics. Really makes you feel that we need to do better. The epilogue, where the author finally gives his own opinions, was I think wisely saved for the end where the reader can fill in the blanks with each of these person’s stories, and packs a huge punch. Just an astounding piece of work on a fundamentally important problem.

An absolute juggernaut. Pummels you with the million ways poor people are socially debilitated on a near-daily basis. Told in an excellent matter-of-fact style, with subtle insights on every page. Never didactic, everything is unbelievable but also deeply understood, and deeply human. An essential read for what should be near the top of everyone's political priorities- guaranteeing housing for every American.

A must read. Which left me asking.... what the hell are we doing to people? It shouldn’t be this hard just to live. We have to get it together as a society and culture.

The research and stories given in this book provides a lense inside the city of Milwaukee.

This one of the most upsetting books I have ever read, and I think it should be required reading for Americans. Housing is a human right.

It was a little boring to read story after story all in one city. I understand the academic value of that but for the lay person that got kind of old.

I read Poverty early this year, and this is just a zoomed in look at one aspect of poverty. It's heartbreaking and absolutely a systemic failure that anyone is homeless. I will never understand why women are evicted for being nuisances when it's abusive men threatening them that are the nuisance. This is excellent and should improve anyone's empathy.
