With every ounce of respect from writer to writer, I think the guy's POV is a little forced right now. I understand he's young and has had a crush on the girl for years though I think it could be executed more subtly. At least with my experience of liking someone for a long period, it tends to be something that we do fawn over the person but it's more mature and accepted. I love the parts where Kai gets giddy at Liya's smile or the things she does, it's adorable, but there's such thing as over-mentioning affection for a character (even in a romance).

That's so far my only complaint about the book! I love the banter between Kai and Liya, it's very organic and well-thought-out. They both have this sort of soulmate, on-the-same-wavelength thing that's rare in books that I find very charming. I love the portrayal of culture because I learn new things about Asian culture and these characters aren't just culture but relatable people.

Overall, I love how cute it is so far and that I'll keep reading!

I just finished the book! It's so cute!

This book was beautiful! The Chinese culture sprinkled throughout was so nice because I didn’t know about a lot of the traditional Chinese festivals and it really felt like I was there enjoying the festivals with the characters. I listened to the audiobook and I highly recommend! The narrators are great! Liya and Kai were both really well rounded characters and it was really nice to be in both of their heads so we could hear both sides of the story. 4.5 out of 5 stars!

This adorable YA romance is also a love letter to Chinese American culture.  The protagonists care deeply about their community and their culture.  It was interesting to learn about some Chinese traditions, as well as the language.  I liked that
LiYa was able to work things through with her parents despite the difficulties.

While I like this author's stories, but I find them triggering because of the parental figures depictions. The depictions are, in most cases, very realistic — in the negative aspects even more so thsn in the positive ones, but that is why I respond to them so strongly.

This story deals with a lot of bottled up emotions, passive aggressive behaviors and lack of communication. Very believably and vividly. Even when the overall tone or outcome is positive, I found that to be a personally difficult read.

But objectively, the book is great: well written, full of realistic complex characters who are growing and doing their best.

I liked the beginning, and then I didn’t read it for like two days so I got bored and skimmed the last 80%. I think the at if I don’t finish a (romance) book in a day, I don’t really enjoy it as much after that.

Ient into this hoping for a cozy, feel-good read and it DELIVERED on so many levels! It was cute, cheesy, yet jam-packed with culture and tenderness and celebration! Such a fun book! My only complaint is there was some drama, and it was a little too much for me, but it's a romance... what can you expect? Also, Friends to Lovers is the superior romance trope and no one can prove me wrong!
