Without a doubt, this is THE BEST book I have ever read on both dealing with, and supporting others through, grief and hard times. Honestly, I think this book should be required reading to get a pass as an adult!!

I have been through way more than my fair-share of trauma and now live with severe chronic pain. I have spent loads of time diving into the deep and dark stuff, and working hard to become a better human without losing my unique quirks. As life found new ways to test me, I blossomed more and more compassion and empathy. And yet, it's still hard to find the right things to say and do when family, friends and acquaintances meet their own hard times.

This book gives you everything you need to know about being a compassionate human in a fun, down-to-earth way complete with Emily McDowell's wonderful illustrations. These colourful inclusions also make it easier to take in all of the golden nuggets without getting down.

The audiobook is equally engaging and very-well read. I'm so happy to own both!!

I started reading this a while ago and never finished. I picked it up again when I was floundering trying to help a friend, and read it in a few hours. It was more helpful when there was a specific scenario where I could apply the guidance. I recommend it for anyone who needs a short, digestible tutorial on how to listen, with specific advice on what to say and what not to say.

A few technical notes: the ebook version has a lot of colors and fonts, not all of which translate to black-and-white readers. In some cases, the text was illegible (black on black), and I had to cross-reference the Nook app on my phone. The tables should be reworked for e-readers, but decreasing the font size made all of the content readable.

I saw this book in an article that listed some books about self-improvement for the new year (Jan. 2018 is fast approaching!) And I thought this book was an incredible idea! I see and talk to so many patrons and when they are experiencing a loss or some hard times and I always wondered if I'm saying or doing the right things. If you can remember that your kindness is your credential, listening speaks volumes, and small gestures make a big difference then you will go a long way. This book covers a lot, has examples of conversations, the pages have an easy reading format (some fun fonts and illustrations occasionally), and I like the reviews of what was covered at the end of chapters. This book was very helpful, there are a few things in here that are going to stick with me for sure! I highly recommend! ~Ashley

I haven’t finished a listen in one day in awhile.

In a utopian society in the far distant future, “Effective Communication” will be a required class in grade school and pieces of this work will be the required reading.

This book is for everyone. If you’re someone who struggles with what to say when “checking in,” for those who may feel resentment towards folks who haven’t checked in, and just anyone who wants to be a better communicator.

Light, conversational, relatable and good humored advice for those looking to best support friends and loved ones in tough situations. Pretty much what I anticipated it would be going in.
