Too much going on, but the story is mediocre at best.

Bonnie & Clyde

At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about reading this. There were times the main protagonist irritated me, but the deeper you delve into the dark world Winstead created, the more you realize it’s all part of the darker growth that takes place.

This novel was dark and heavy; filled with twists you wouldn’t necessarily see coming. A modern day - darker - Bonnie & Clyde.

DNF - it felt immature and young to me. I was so bored and the narrator was not it for me. Not sure how it has so many 5 star reviews but it just wasn’t for me

It's a great disservice when reviewers compare books to other books. I got this book through a subscription to @CrimebytheBox and was disappointed when I read the blurbs comparing it to Twilight and Colleen Hoover. I would never intentionally by a book with those comparisons. Fortunately, I was able to attend an event with the author, and I was interested. This book is so much better than the novels it's being compared to. I'm impressed by the writer's intent to show the power of disregarded and ignored groups.

Satanic panic and serial killers...I have such vivid memories of the late 80s and early 90s and this book really tapped into the undercurrent of fear that pervaded the stories we told each other around camp fires and at sleepovers.

Wasn’t exactly sure where I was headed but loved the journey to get there.

The story here is a good one that is worth telling, but the execution felt strangely childish? The protagonist’s justification (or not) for her own actions and that of her friend/lover do not seem to follow any sort of logic. She is utterly repulsed by some desires and behaviors but attracted to or else completely unbothered by others that, by her own moral code, are much worse. It doesn’t feel like that dissonance is part of her character, though—more like it’s just a result of bad writing. It doesn’t fit. The obsession with Twilight and thinly-veiled allusions to Bonnie and Clyde were just weird.

Was this a 12hr Twilight tribute?! Cringey, predictable and way too long. I really need to start DNFing books
