i had been meaning to write a review for this but never got around to... however today i stumbled upon a little note in my phone from when i was reading this book.
“The character development of Lyra has been lovely.
I was absolutely in awe while reading of the "pilgrimage", on chapter thirteen.”
it’s not much, but now i wouldn’t know well what else to say.

Does not suffer from the infamous mid-trilogy slump!

I enjoyed the pacing in this book. It felt a lot smoother than the first and things were happening.

It’s basically set in another world all over again with connections to the first so instead of just following through from the first book it did feel like a whole lot of world building all over again.

I didn’t like the religious commentary undertones that are seemingly throughout the story.

This one ends like a proper cliffhanger so I’m looking forward of the next to wrap this story up. I do hold the magical elements and fights I loved on the first book return.

I FEEL. CRAZY. this one didn't grab me from the start the way the first one did but i've just finished and i feel CRAZY. pullman you crazy genius you did it again i can't believe the last like three chapters of this book come in swinging with
the christian god is The Enemy

obviously i am now understanding even more why my milton professor told me to read this series. this book was not quite as entertaining for me as the first, i think because some of the most appealing parts of the first were necessarily absent--i fell in love with lyra's world, but so much of this book is spent dipping in and out of ours; i find mrs. coulter one of the most compelling characters on the page, and she was on the page a lot less. also, i miss iorek. but the writing and the sheer craft of the story remain so vivid and elegant and deeply feeling. i didn't come to this series for breakneck twists; i came to it for the concept and the intertextuality. but i would like to shout out the way pullman embeds every upcoming reveal so smoothly and patiently, so that the gasp-out-loud moments feel less like twists and more like things that should have been obvious. soooooo well done. i would follow lyra anywhere to the ends of the earth

(the
lee scoresby and hester
scene... fuck ALL the way off!!!!)

I really enjoyed The Golden Compass so I'm quite disappointed with this sequel. We are ripped from the rich world of Lyra Balacqua and tossed back into our own, only to be thrown into a third dark and confusing world. The back and forth would have been tolerable had the dialogue been better or the characters been further developed. I felt like the book lacked the depth the first had shown. Because of the change of local, it is also missing many of the characters I liked the first book for. I *might* have read the third, had it not come right out and declared the point of all this was to kill the ultimate authority, god. Bored now.

still a great book but my nostalgia for it definitely makes it better!!

season 2 of the show was better in a lot of ways- mrs coulter is more present and she really is a killer character, will is much more likeable, the pacing makes sense a bit more but then again season 2 learned from what worked in this!!

it’s a tiny bit middle book syndromed but still is SO good and the last few pages are INSANE- lee’s scene.. don’t.
