This is where I start to dislike the series. Kings writing really takes a turn for the worst in my opinion. This book picks up after Wind Through the Keyhole our Ka-Tet has come to a small farming community, Calla, that has a major problem. Every so often, riders called Wolves because of the masks they wear, comes and steals half their children. Most of the children in Calla are born as twins, the Wolves steal one half of the pair and send it back years later "roont", which means they are now mentally disabled, unusually large, and die at a very young age. As usual, the Gunslingers are asked to solve the problem, but it is never as clear as just getting rid of some bad people, the Wolves are agents of the Crimson King, and there is the added complication of Susannah being pregnant, and it isn't a wanted pregnancy. Not a favorite book, and really, if the series had ended with this one, I would have been just fine.

If you’re reading this series and have made it this far, this is the story of end of the world gunslingers; Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake and their talking pet Oy as they continue their quest to prevent the destruction of the Dark Tower and, consequently, save all worlds from Chaos and the Crimson King. While not as strong as Wizard and Glass, this book has the gunslingers helping a farm town called Calla Bryn Sturgis from a band of “Wolves” that come around every 20 or so years and steal children. Picture The Magnificent Seven by Stephen King, then throw in all kinds of crazy stuff like Father Callahan (from Salem’s Lot) and a side adventure in New York of 1977. Definitely enjoyable.

Still inspired, imaginative storytelling and the same bodybuilding found in the rest of The Dark Tower series. Ultimately this novel fell short of the rest of The series.

The first half was a great read, but the second just felt like plodding on towards the obvious, eventual ending we got. Some twists and turns, but this is not at the level of the previous books in the series.

This book would have earned at least 4.5 stars if the battle was a bit more interesting. After reading Battle of the Mejis, this felt a let down. I loved the details though, and how the characters were gradually developed. Roland, from an uncaring jerk to a leader that worries about his ka-tet; Eddie, from a quick tempered fool to a patient, wise young man; Susannah, from Detta/Odetta to herself; and Jake. The first kill, the first death, and growing up.

The complications of Susanah's pregnancy had me intrigued, and terrified of what the chap is.

4.2 stars.
