This book was hyped up as brutal but I felt it lacked. A lot of background information was described in full detail. I did like the idea of the story, its what I was drawn to in the first place.

When Claire goes into detail about what has happened to her, no one believes her? I get the cop that was handling the case, but her family? They just wanted it sweep it under the rugmikekaz's review against another edition

I'm not exactly sure why but I delayed reading this book for a while. It circled up on my To Be Read list and I kept skipping it for other books. A mistake on my side because it is way better than my misconceptions had me thinking.
The story drops us not quite in the middle of the action but in the aftermath. In my mind I thought "this is the results from an alternate universe version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". An apt enough description that I think still fits. While one portion does focus on the family, other threads follow the sole survivor and her rescuer. Specifically, it looks at the steps that each person takes to deal with the situation and get beyond what happened. The story takes itself seriously and is realistic with its actions. The limitations of reality are still there and fall upon each person. The end result? A book that I really wish I had read sooner without pushing off.

Kin is perfection
I believe the characters and the plot to be well fleshed our. I enjoyed literally every single page. I didn’t want it to end, wish there was more. Similar to Brother by Ania Ahlborn and the Off Season trilogy by Jack Ketchum. I wish this was part of a trilogy as well so I could just keep reading!
KPB knows how to weave a tale. This is his eighth book I’ve read and I enjoyed them all, though this one has now become my favorite. It may even be in my top five overall books!

Claire is found wandering a dirt road in Elkwood, Alabama, naked and severely beaten. Her friends were tortured, murdered, then consumed by a family who claim they are doing the Lord’s work. Claire got away, but what kind of life can she live after everything she has been through? Her boyfriend’s brother, an Iraq war veteran, won’t let the family get away with their crimes. It’s time to return to Elkwood.
Kin is a well written novel handling the aftermath of a horrible tragedy, focusing on how people process events differently. I was intrigued to see how Burke’s story would unfold. Not enough horror novels tell the story of the after, instead they focus on the before & present. Kin is definitely more character based than plot, but still includes action. A lot of the violence is discussed in past-tense, with glimpses of previous events, making the story way less gory than expected. Kin is worth a read, I loved the language Burke used but character based novels have never been my favorite.

I'm tired of men writing women like this. I read 38% and it was just nonstop mentions of sa and men ogling a suffering woman (she had her eyed gouged out and the guy who saved her was looking at her breasts). Give me a break

A fun version of a slasher film. That takes place at the spot most slashers end. It deals excellently with the amount of pain that will follow the events such as mass murder, and just how many lives it will effect. And the villainous family, are some of the slimiest creeps put onto page. Mamma in Bed and Papa in Grey will live rent free in your mind long after you finish this book.
