Finished this in a day: flawed but real characters and a complex narrative with unexpected twists. Would recommend!

I grew up about thirty minutes from Shaker Heights and can confirm that Heinen's really is the fanciest grocery store, and you really do have to drive your car up to the front so they can load your groceries in the back for you.

I love that this book makes you turn over the idea of motherhood and examine it from every angle. The mother of four in the suburbs, the single mom, surrogacy, adoption, biological motherhood, abortion, everything is covered here with tenderness and fierceness. Ng doesn't give you the answers: she gives you the questions.

3.5/5 stars.
I think I prefer the changes that the show made. It felt like the climax was so much more intense than the book. In general, the book had too much description for my tastes, and not even dialogue. Everything was just stated instead of shown, and the tone of the writing just didn't allow me to feel like I was a part of the action. I still like the story, and I think it brings up many important points regarding race, social classes, motherhood, etc. But I think I prefer the show over the book on this one.

A well written book that I was excited to keep picking up and seeing what was happening next. I found some of the OOVs super frustrating (which I guess was the intention) and I wish that it was more of a victory story for Mia and Pearl. The twist was good and very unpredictable, a lot of moral, thought provoking questions throughout.
