4.5⭐️ LOVED it! Thank you Tarah for the ARC !!

Short Synopsis: LyRynn and Deacon, HS lovers now turned enemies, have to work together to renovate their grandmothers’ Co-Op in order to sell and make a profit. With 8 years of not speaking and built up animosity, will they be able to let go of their history, confront how they feel and start over?

Thoughts: Okay this book has SO many of my favorite tropes- second chance romance, marriage of convenience, forced proximity- all within the context of a home renovation, which I’ve been loving lately. The plot, will not the most unique, was hilarious, entertaining (lots of pranks/banter) and filled with so much love. Tarah is skilled at creating characters that feel like friends, and by the end of her books, I always feel apart of the HEA. I adored LyRynn and Deacon both separately and together, and appreciated the balance she created between their hesitation to move on from the past and their openness to find a new beginning. Also, there is no third act break up so extra brownie points :)

Read if you like:
-Second chance romance
-Forced proximity
-Marriage of convenience
-Dual POVs
-Fixer Upper

I liked it, but even though I was super intrigued by the premise and the promised tropes (marriage of convenience, second chance romance, forced proximity), I just didn’t love it. It was missing the magic element that was in Funny Feelings.

What I liked:
•The relationship background (I wish we were given more flashbacks for even more context)
•The characters’ flaws on display in a raw, transparent way
•Multigenerational families and grappling with trauma through each generation

What I didn’t:
•Plot just felt messy (I think the author is still finding her rhythm, but I do really like her voice!)
•Too easy of a resolution? It felt like a plateau after a decently ramped-up first half
•Some grammatical errors that always bother me

I’ll still read this author’s next work, and I genuinely recommend Funny Feelings!

The story
LaRynn and Deacon have each inherited half shares in a house on the each in Santa Cruz from their two grandmothers. They spent summers there together as teens but split up when there was misunderstanding and confusion about their relationship. Now Deacon is able to fix up the place and LaRynn has access to a trust fund if she is married. With the forced proximity of the house while they are renovating to sell, the two eventually face their personal and shared demons.

My thoughts
After reading Tarah DeWitt’s Funny Feelings, and seeing praise for The Co-Op, I don’t think any of the hype is undeserved. The characters in this beautiful story are tinged with loss, regret, guilt and feelings of inadequacy, lives that haven’t gone to plan, but underneath all of that are two sweet and kind personalities that have each other’s best interests at heart. There are lots of rich descriptions, deep personalities and wonderful supporting friends, all set with a lot of music in the backdrop. It’s a goodie.

This was a sweet read.

Marriage of convenience, forced proximity, HEA, slow burn, and some spice mixed in.

if you know me, you already know how i feel about tarah and her writing.

she writes the most romantic lines i've ever read like i need her words put on display in the louvre i'm serious.

"what if i told you i was scared i'd get lost in myself again? that i'm scared of changing, too. what would you say?"
"i'd find you. and i don't think there's a version of you i couldn't love."

"hate that you thought i was anything less than gone for you. because i'm so fucking gone for you, larynn."

"be my wife. stay my wife. forever, larynn. i don't care where we end up or what we do as long as i have you."

tarah's entire catalogue is filled with characters that are so relatabley (is that a word?) vulnerable and it makes the stories so much more grounded and believable and gives them so much heart. authors that put so much of themselves into their work that they make it seem real and dimensional like it could happen are so special to me. i love the good feel-good and soft romances, and tarah's books have this feel too, but i also love the stories that while they keep you in a bubble are still real and raw and make you sob halfway through up until the very end.

thank you tarah dewitt i speak for the entire world actually when i say ur the best ever mwah love u

The Co-op is a lovely second chance romance with fun tropes including forced proximity, marriage of convenience, and slow burn! The story follows LaRynn who after her grandma's recent passing, has coinherited a home with Deacon, the former fling who broke her heart. Set on selling the house, LaRynn is shocked to find the home is in complete shambles and in dire need of renovations after a recent fire. In order to accomplish that, Deacon and LaRynn agree to marry so she can access her trust fund and they can renovate the house together. When the two begin cohabitating together, they are forced to acknowledge what led to the end of their previous relationship.

I absolutely loved this book, and had so much fun reading it! Deacon and LaRynn were amazing together. I loved the character development and how the two admitted to the faults in their previous relationship and were able to move on from it. Once they did, the connection they were able to forge was so healthy and comforting. I also enjoyed the tumultuous relationship the two had in the beginning, the banter and the way they were at odds with each other was so entertaining. This is my first ever read from Tarah Dewitt and I'm blown away by her writing, I'm so excited to dive into her other books.
