Entertaining, doesn't linger or get boring for too long. Characters continue to be compelling enough while not being very deep. A fine book

Pretty fun, lots of underworld magic shenanigans, but the getting kidnapped thing like every day is a bit much. Overall enjoyable though, hopefully we'll get to see more women characters now since it's basically been a sausage fest and Piper.

This is a near perfect adventure. I really enjoyed reading through Piper's character growth. Everything seemed like a natural progression from who Piper started out as leaning heavily on Ash and Lyre's experience to stepping out from their shadows and relying on her own skills and contacts. The depth of the turn around in her and Ash's relationship was very gratifying and it's refreshing to have a female lead who can both be saved and save others. I liked that the books and scenarios can put two people with different kinds of power and show the value both can offer. This is the best book of the series.

This book was SUCH an angst fest. Soooo much self pity, torture, pains, tears, sO much teen angst. As a self appointed angst lover, it was too much even for me.
The first few torture scenes were hard to read and I genuinely felt bad for the characters, af the end I did not care anymore. And oommmygoooddd the self pity. Piper kept making stupid decisions, which you know we all do, but the way she kept agonising over it. It was even more torturous than the actual torture scenes.
Further more the book was fine. A lot happened which I liked.
The worst thing about this book is that my hope for a poly relationship between Ash, piper and lyre was crushed. We're probably going to keep this bad love triangle and it makes me sad.

I just can't go on.

Frankly, I can't even believe I finished this book.

The heroine, Piper, gets stupider every page. It's utterly unbelievable. And at the end, when she decided she'd be safe heading off to boarding school...after just surviving an attack where the evil warlord brought an ARMY to attack a consulate to get her...I just laughed uncontrollably.

This is where the series and I part ways. I like Ash well enough, but Piper is unsalvageable and I'm just rooting for her horrible death now.

Lol, a boarding school. I'm still laughing.

The main character appears to be talented only insofar as she can do martial arts and pitifully shout, "Ash! Ash!" every two minutes. It's enough to make me wish Ash and Lilith had made a go of it.

So I am actually enjoying this more than the typical "YA" fantasy however having read Annette Marie's Guild Codex series these books both suffer and gain from the comparison. They gain because I know she is a good writer so I'm more forgiving, I guess. I think I like it more having already greatly liked one of her series. The suffer is just that the other series is better - of course I can see where she has grown as a writer.

So I found the action a bit over the top, the bad guy also overpowered. Still the world building is interesting - I like that Piper is not overpowered but worked hard for her physical prowess, she also makes (mostly) rational decisions.

Overall it is good, I'm definitely going to finish the series (and the next one).

3.5 Stars for this dystopian urban fantasy.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was the same as for the first book and continues to do a good job with the narration. The book is fast-paced with plenty of action. This was a little more intriguing, learning more about the Sahar stone and more about the demons and their realms.

One thing I will say, is I LOVE the way Annette Marie writes her slow burn romances. There is so much great tension, will they won't they moments, and witty banter. I also really enjoy how she writes a lot of her MMC. Whilst this isn't my favourite series that I have read written by her, it is still a solid enjoyable read.
