I found this book a little odd. Man kidnaps woman, they fall in love. True, he's a good man, not actually guilty of the crime of which he's been accused, but the transition from fear to seduction was a little awkward for me.

It's been so long since I've picked up an old-school romance. I guess I do miss Linda Howard's work.

-it was ok. some of the sex scenes were uncomfortable with the guy being too pushy/hurting.

The story of a woman doctor in an era when that was a novel concept.

Rafe, a man with a bounty on his head, shows up at Annie's practice wounded and with a gun in his hand, demanding she fix him. He is surprised that the doctor is a woman, but soon discovers that she knows what she's doing, so when she tells him that his wounds need more attention and longer term treatment, he kidnaps her so that she can treat him.

The two get stranded in a cabin in the mountains due to bad weather, and while there, they get to know each other and start developing feelings for one another. Rafe is on a mission to clear his name and when Annie eventually finds out the reason for his wanted status, becomes as determined as he is and accompanies him.

Engaging story set in a harsh world, with two characters that may be opposites but fit each other quite nicely.

It was really good, although I'm not one for historical romance. I liked the history involving the "Lost Confederate Papers" so that it had that hint of truth to it, like in Clive Cussler's novels. It seemed almost like a typical "hostage falling in love with her captor" story, though, except for that strange "magical" effect that the two had...that part seemed a little strange in this type of story. The main thing I found strange though, was that, after running into Atwater, they never really come into that much trouble after that...so much of the story was supposed to be about McCay being on the run from bounty hunters, but that changed after Atwater...it almost seemed to fizzle out after that. I guess I just wanted the action to go all the way through :)
