this shit was cray. a man comes seeking -the- sibyl as he has been cursed by jesus himself, for not allowing him to lean on his home. now he lives a life with no love, no joy, no end. the sibyl lives with her middle aged son who SPOILER ALERT is literally just another child of god idk how many there are but apparently a lot. this woman has been through HELLLLLLL. HELL!! okay i could go on and on and on about this book but the moral of the story is god is just like us he’s a huge fucking dick that will only reward the ones who love him but like also maybe help you if fucks u over like rlly bad. this book was so good so real i want everyone to read it but judging but the number of ratings uh no one will
uh edit i just read the synopsis and it says that hes the child of god like immediately so. lowkey the synopsis spoils the whole book but uh anyway who am i but a mere foolish mortal

I liked it, at least I think I liked it. I am apparently on a roll of not knowing what to make of recent books I've read. There is a LOT to this book on so many levels. If anyone has read this and would like to give me their thoughts on ways to interpret it, I would love to hear them.

One of my new favorite fables.
"Yes, god was incomprehensible, cruel and frightening. She, too, had found him so--this sibyl who had known him as no one else had known him, who had been possessed by him, loved and cursed by him, who had lived her whole life for him and had even borne him a son. A son who must have come into the world just to show that meaninglessness, too, is divine."

There’s something so effortless and ancient about the way this story is told. It’s captivating and engaging, as well as mysterious and romantic. I’ve never heard Delphi told like this, and it’s truly a story that holds the reader. The perspective is one that tells real stories of real fears from honest and ordinary people, including the Oracle.
She is told as a victim of her circumstances, betrayed and abused by her position and by love. Faith is questioned and rejected, lost and found. Truly a human story.

This is the story, parable, of how a young girl is chosen to be the vessel through which god speaks in the most revered temple of Delphi. It tells of the girl's love, desire, revulsion, and hate of this god that brings her both pleasure and pain as he consumes her day after day, year after year; as well as, the fear and vengeance that he bestows on her for loving someone other than god. While, I can't say that I enjoyed the novella, it has got me thinking, and a story like that is difficult to forget.

Read this for a class and was struck at how beautiful and bizzare this book was while remaining lucid and interesting.
Really, Lagerkvist is hard to review without just spewing adjectives.
