I was looking forward to a story with John Paul, and I'm so glad it was this one! I was on the edge of my seat the entire book. I thought I had it figured out and then it changed. When Tony turned out to be one of the conspirators, I was both surprised and not. There was always something suspicious about him to me. I did not expect him to be working with Jilly. Monk's death was a bit anticlimactic, but I think it was fitting. He thought he was so special and so smart, but he died as no one. I would have liked to know what was in Anne's letter, and I still wonder why she didn't try to survive. But what a great cast of strong female characters! They were great.

When Noah popped up again, it made the book that much better. He's such a fun character, and I'm excited to eventually see how his story unfolds.

Enjoyed the quick pace and suspense, but the rushed end made little sense to me.

This was a good book that held my attention from the beginning to end. I liked the plot and characters.

This is the 5th book I've read from Buchanan-Renard and so far the scariest one.

Jilly Delaney really freaked me out. She was a frickin' maniac, as Carrie and Avery said.
I felt really sorry for Avery because she wouldn't be able to have kids.

I was also frickin' shocked when Tony turned out to be a son of a bitch as well. I'd've preferred if Jilly ended up dead.

John Paul was a sweet guy and I liked the romance between him and Avery.

Since the first book I've read from Julie Garwood was Shadow Dance, it's a bit strange to watch Noah acting like this, because I already know his future and when he was saying he thought he would never settle down, I was like 'Oh, yes you will, babe'.
I was a bit disappointed with the end but I loved the book anyway.

Re-read June 2017
I liked this one less than the first two in the series. I think it's because ... there was a heck of a lot of time spent away from the h/h, showing what the secondary characters were up to: Monk and Jilly, Carrie and the others, we cut to one or the other of them every other chapter. And while I liked the overall plot, I felt like ... I just didn't need this much time with those characters. It ended up making the developing relationship between John Paul and Avery feel kind of thin, because we didn't spend much time with it.

It wasn't bad. I just connected less to them, and wasn't all "awwww" about their connection. So much of their chapters was about handling the plot, and then every other chapter was dealing with secondary characters... and it ended up feeling like the connection between them largely developed offscreen.
SpoilerHell, we didn't even get to see how John Paul convinced Avery to stay with. We have a mention of her feeling like she needed to put some distance between them, as they were heading into the final showdown, because she knew when Monk and Jilly were handled, she and John Paul would be going their separate ways. And then the next indication of relationship was... after it was all done, we see her fiddle with her engagement right while meeting with her boss. Wait, what? How did that happen? When? Did he pin her down and jam it on her finger? Or did she actually surrender to the fact that she couldn't stand to be without him? Why don't we get to see that moment?

So this one gets a ***3.5** from me.

The storyline was outlandish but kept the book going at a good pace. It was a simple, fun read.
