The Twelve Days of Dash & Lily by David Levithan, Rachel Cohn

I wanted an easy read to celebrate Christmas. Lily comes across as an extremely privileged brat. She takes care of her grandpa and it puts her in a depression to take care of another person. It was hard to like this book when the boyfriend character makes huge gestures and the person receiving is ungrateful.

*spoiler*

I ended up rooting for Dash to break up with a toxic relationship (lies hanging out with other, doesn’t respond to texts, goes missing a second time). Hoping young people don’t think this is a healthy relationship.

I really enjoyed the first Dash and Lily book. It was a perfect Christmas read with fun, quirky characters and a cute (if somewhat unbelievable) scavenger-type hunt throughout New York City. Twelve Days, while still good, was not quite as enjoyable as the original Dash and Lily in my opinion. I liked both Dash and Lily a lot from before, but they were both going through some stuff and were a little harder to like in this book–it gave the book a different tone I think. I also had a hard time remembering some of the things that happened and people from the first book. They mentioned a couple of people or events and I was just like, “What?”. Overall, I thought this was a cute follow-up to the original, but honestly Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares could have remained a stand-alone and I would have been fine. 4/5

Note: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I might come back to this book next year, but this winter season I don't vibe with that at all. I'm not invested in the characters and don't care for the atmosphere, so I don't think I'll be finishing it any time soon, and reading it on any other day rather than winter holidays seems a little pointless to me, so there's that.

Excellent follow up

This lovely sequel is a beautiful way to watch the continued journey of Lily and Dash. It keeps being both sweet and also a reflection of the challenges we all have to face becoming adults

hopeful fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Loveable characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

flipping the grumpy/sunshine just felt a little odd but I appreciate the attempt.

Dash as Santa " because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter whether the story's true or not. What matters is the care that's been put into the story. the love. if something is pretend, that usually means someone has taken the time to build a story for you to live in. And building stories takes a lot of work. And, yes, there will come a time when you'll see the story isn't true. But the intentions behind it? completely true. the love behind it? Also true."

ahhh love Dash!

I read the first book years ago and didn't know there was a second and third. Watched the Netflix version and decided to read them. This was kind of a dud. I actually liked the Netflix version more than the books.
