This book is a love letter to gamers everywhere. The characters were complex and flawed, and it made them incredibly lovable and relatable. The story takes turns you don’t expect, but in the end, it is expected, isn’t it? The wild twists and turns of life we never expect but know are bound to surprise us? How people fall out of our lives and promptly back into them? How lovely. Highly recommend.

I enjoyed this book, though it left me with mixed feelings.

The prose is beautiful, but also keeps the reader at a distance from the characters.

Sam and Sadie are both somewhat unreliable narrators. Trying to parse together what might have happened and why is part of what makes this book an interesting read.

Last week, determined to finish 2022's most popular book by the end of the year, I pulled T3 back off my shelf. After an hour or so, I turned the page and saw "2", as in Chapter 2. I promptly put the book back in place on the shelf. I made a haul at the discount bookshop and felt distinctly that I can't start anything else until I finish this. So I made it almost through the first part and disliked it immensely the entire time. The characters are unlikeable, self-centered, and aside from narrative about their histories, they are one-dimensional. We get no insight into this supposed grand love story aside from them telling each other they love each other. Sometimes the author interjects with narration instead of letting the characters tell the story. This style is disjointed and jarring. I am definitely okay with putting this book down and leaving these characters be where they are.

This book sucked me in right away.  It’s my favorite book of 2023.  It has so much to offer.  Trauma, relationships, ways we experience love and loss, social hierarchies, growing up, and some really meaningful real world issues.

As a gamer, and pop-culture lover, it hit all the right spots for me.  None of the main characters are perfect, but you can see how their past traumas have shaped them.

Pick a free day to read this because you won’t want to put it down. And maybe read it with a friend so you can process it!

I had not expected to be so gripped by a story of friends building video games, but the tech context is just a backdrop for brilliant writing that pulls you in. This book is really about love and friendship, of identity, of play, and of beautiful words.

Turns out games are about so much more than games. The best person in the book, Marx, summarised it as:
“What is a game?" Marx said. "It's tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. It's the possibility of infinite rebirth, infinite redemption. The idea that if you keep playing, you could win."

I was not expecting the twists and turns in the plot, but more than that, I was not expecting to be so invested in the relationships between Sadie Green, Sam Maser, and Marx, even though you end up being frustrated with Sadie and Sam's arrogance, and self-centeredness, you still want them to find their way.

“The way to turn an ex-lover into a friend is to never stop loving them, to know that when one phase of a relationship ends it can transform into something else. It is to acknowledge that love is both a constant and a variable at the same time.”
