The prose is beautiful, but also keeps the reader at a distance from the characters.
Sam and Sadie are both somewhat unreliable narrators. Trying to parse together what might have happened and why is part of what makes this book an interesting read.

I have seen some posts on social media regarding this author's Zionism. I am coming from the perspective that being pro-Palestinians is not antisemitic and if I have missed something I want to add the disclaimer that I am not defending the author but being fair. There is mention of Israel because that is where one character is from, and another character reads a book about "the founding of Israel". This did not come across to me as the author supporting Israel but the character losing themselves in a relationship. The way it is worded is definitely problematic. The character himself is off-putting and unlikeable and there does not seem to be any glorification of Israel as a government or state that I came across. There are Jewish characters in this book who are not religious and I definitely do not see a problem with that; it was one thing I liked about them.mariambbd's review against another edition

As a gamer, and pop-culture lover, it hit all the right spots for me. None of the main characters are perfect, but you can see how their past traumas have shaped them.

Turns out games are about so much more than games. The best person in the book, Marx, summarised it as:
“What is a game?" Marx said. "It's tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. It's the possibility of infinite rebirth, infinite redemption. The idea that if you keep playing, you could win."
I was not expecting the twists and turns in the plot, but more than that, I was not expecting to be so invested in the relationships between Sadie Green, Sam Maser, and Marx, even though you end up being frustrated with Sadie and Sam's arrogance, and self-centeredness, you still want them to find their way.
“The way to turn an ex-lover into a friend is to never stop loving them, to know that when one phase of a relationship ends it can transform into something else. It is to acknowledge that love is both a constant and a variable at the same time.”
Moderate: Sexual violence, Mental illness, Car accident, Death, Gun violence, Murder, Ableism, and Chronic illness
