I loved it!

This sequel to The Tattoo Thief did not disappoint, and I devoured the book. I got lost in it, only putting it down once when I realized it was well past midnight.

The writing, the storyline, and character growth … I enjoyed it all. And I really hope this isn't the last of the series.

Her Last Breath follows on from the previous book in the Tattoo Thief series, and I have to say it hasn’t affected my enjoyment of this thriller set in Brighton concerning a twisted killer who’s attacking young women with seemingly no connection other than one young man. There’s plenty of tense moments in this book as the police team investigating are also dealing with their own personal “baggage”, a potential mole in the team (that’s never resolved but maybe this will be addressed if there’s another book in the series) and the case from the previous book is still lingering thanks to the impending court case. I liked how the story (and the series) uses tattoos as it’s main theme - it’s a new spin for me and the tense moments we’re really tense. I guessed the big bad early on in the book, but it still didn’t detract my enjoyment. A solid read.

Thank you to Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an honest review. Really disappointed with this one; I don’t usually request books in a series I haven’t read but this one intrigued me enough and I will say it works well as a stand-alone. The concept and particularly the killer’s MO are fresh and I enjoyed them, but the plot felt too inconsequential and with too many holes or unanswered questions for me to really enjoy it. The characters themselves were okay, but any depth added to them felt superficial and ingenuine so I really struggled with seeing them beyond people on a page. Nice ideas, I just feel there was no impact or real substance.

Detective Francis Sullivan and his team are back in the second book of the Sullivan/Mullins series, and this one is even more intense than the first!

A young woman is brutally assaulted, tattooed with a strange phrase, and fighting for her life. She happens to be the girlfriend of Alex Mullins, Marni’s son. As more women are abducted, they race against time to stop the crimes, even as evidence mounts against Alex.

I loved the first book in this series, and I LOVED this book. I absolutely could not put it down. There is something about the way Belsham writes that is just so visual, making the pages fly by. This is a fast-paced thriller with much going on for each character we first met in The Tattoo Thief. It was fantastic to revisit the lives of everyone involved in the first case, but the race to solve this case is center-stage and intense.

This series reads like a movie and gives classic Alex Cross or Robert Landon vibes but with the finesse of a female writer’s hand. If you like mysteries and thrillers, I’d put these down as MUST READ and the audiobook is absolutely fantastic.

A solid police procedural thriller. I hadn’t realised that this was a sequel to an earlier book. There were a lot of references back to the former novel - which mean that I wouldn’t go back to read it.
Some twists and turns and the method of murder was an unusual one.

After old remains are found in a heatwave, a young women is attacked and left fighting for her life. After 24 hours, she’s dead and a deadly tattoo is discovered. Then another young women disappears and Detective Francis Sullivan and his team fear there may be a serial killer on the loose…

I loved this one more than the first instalment and I didn’t think that was possible! I loved all of the POVs - normally I’m not a fan of a lot of POVs but Alison pulls it off every time. I loved seeing all of the returning characters in this book and getting to know all of the new ones, especially the killer with their POV being so disturbing but also interesting to hear more about them and their motivation for their crimes.

I loved seeing the story develop and it make reference to the events that happened in the first book in the series as you get to see the trial from the murders in the first book. I was left guessing right up until the killer was revealed and when they were, it made so much sense! I found this book so hard to put down as it was jammed packed with suspense and I cannot wait to read the third (and unfortunately last) book in the series to see how it’s all concluded!

4 ⭐ = Good.
#2 in this series, and a good read. I found the relationships between all the professionals very engaging and all the characters incredibly realistic.
The plot was fast paced, with enough tension to keep me wanting to pick up and continue reading this book.
A smattering of swearing, but it was in context and not used unnecessarily. This is one of my pet hates!
I'm looking forward to reading book #3.
