A little slow to start, but once it got going I couldn’t put it down.

LOVED this. A very imaginative retelling of the story. The prose was full (if that is a proper way to describe it? I can't put my finger on the right word) and I loved Ash.

This was a fun audiobook. I love fairytale retellings and I enjoyed the twists and turns that this one took with Cinderella as a starting point. The world building was incredible and the little changes in how things played out along with the ways it kept the original's plot was impressive.

It took me a little while to get into this story, but by the second half I was dreading putting it down at the end of my lunch hour everyday. It's a quick read and an unexpected retelling of a classic. The imagery is beautiful. I would definitely recommend you read this.

This books confused me. I was expecting juat another Cinderella rehashing but at every turn Lo had me bewildered and searching for the original Cinderella I've come to recognize. This of course is a good thing. In Malinda Lo's first book she does tell a Cinderella story but supplements faeries for talking mice and a huntress for 'Prince Charming.' I found this book intriguing and refreshing as compared to Disney's Cinderella, or any other Cinderella for that matter. Lo takes a new look at the old story and transforms Ash from an orphan to a princess in her own right. Though I'm still caught in the whirlwind of Lo's writing and have yet to sort out decisive feelings I would reccommend this book if you like fairy tales and and satisfying endings (not happily ever afters because those can be sickening).

2.5 stars.
I wanted to love this, I really did, but I found it quite uninspired.
While the writing is quite lovely, nothing much happens in this Cinderella reimagining. Ash is a passive and uninteresting character. I didn’t connect with her, and things just happen to her rather than her making her own choices. Nor are there any real problems or conflict within the story, nothing that requires much effort to resolve, anyway.
And there’s no emotion or chemistry between Ash and the huntress. We never really see them falling in love or anything special between them, and so their relationship feels forced, insincere and unremarkable.
This book has an interesting premise, but unfortunately the execution is somewhat lacking.

I really enjoyed this re telling of Cinderella, from the more traditional representation of Fair Folk to the non traditional romantic decision Ash has to make in the end.
