a quick fun read! interesting enough central plot with Starfleet ethical dilemmas. surprisingly good insight into Saru's motivations and character. at times dialogue overall ranged from robotic to cliched exclamations, but at least there wasn't the excess exposition that weighs down other Trek books -- good pacing. a few too many space battles for my tastes (I skimmed those bits), but I can see other people finding that exciting. the best part was the heart of the story -- Michael's acceptance of becoming a first officer and confrontation with her difficult history. her team up with Spock had me hooked the whole way through -- a fascinating take on their complicated relationship with each other and their family.

5 Stars. There is no other option. Any fan of Discovery must read this book. The tie-ins are absolutely incredible and the story itself is riveting. There is not a dull moment as multiple fan favourites come together to try and resolve an issue that seems unsolvable. After this novel Captain Georgiou makes her claim in my opinion to truly stand among the great Captains we know and love, such as Kirk and Sisko. I am excited to read the next Disocvery novel to hit the shelves as this one has set a high bar for the novels to come.

Fun read. Not the deepest novel I’ve read but it fills in some backstory on the characters. A good filler until the second season starts.

Great prequel to DCS pilot. Story could be better.

I'm torn as to give this book 4 or 3. Overall, plotwise and characterwise it's about 3.5. All about colony and it's government is very boring and just out of place. Also, did't like author's depiction of captain Pike at all: he is this narrow-minded and stubborn warmonger, you can't see past his (very questionable) orders. Didn't like him in any of the scenes.
Will tell nothing about the plot, and that says everything about it.
On the other hand, all Shenzhou's crew is fun, we've got a lot of details about everyone, Saru is as snarky and moving as ever, and captain Georgiou is as perfect, as any 24th century captain could be.
But the brightest spot in this book for me is character of Michael Burnham, and her relationship and chemistry with young Spock. Mack really nailed it, and I liked every word.
I think it promotes the score to 4, so 4 it is.

Can't wait for another DCS novel, but maybe not a prequel? At least without Pike, ok?

Warning, this review may contain spoilers for the show Star Trek Discovery seasons 1 and 2.

I really enjoyed reading this book, as I like anything Star Trek related. With each chapter, it never failed to keep my attention. That being said, this book does have a few flaws, that really is not the book's fault.

I think that this book needs a few tweaking since Season 2 of the show has aired. In this book, Spock and Michael are distant and not really connected as they are in the show.
Spoiler In the show is revealed that Spock and Michael are siblings, but here in the book, it's almost sort of hinted at but not really confirmed.

Other than that I really loved that both Pike and Georgiou are featured in this novel. After the show, Pike has quickly become one of my favorite captains of Star Trek. To see there characters expanded more, really made me happy.

Alien technology has been a long interest to me, and this novel has it all. From colonists in distress and a mysterious vessel from years in the past. There is even
Spoiler a rogue governor
. involved.

Overall if you love Star Trek or Star Trek Discovery, check this book out. You can not go wrong! There are so many awesome details you can learn about the characters. Even if they are considered beta canon.
