This book was definitely different than the other classic romance novels I read. I wasn’t able to easily predict where the plot was going, so that was refreshing. It was a cute story, and a quick read. Can’t complain.

She broke my brain... but you broke my heart.

This line made me bump my rating from a 3 to a 4.

This is really more of a 3.5.

I recently met Susan Elizabeth Phillips at her signing in San Diego, and she was a delight to meet. I had only read a few of her books and she had been hit or miss with me. I, of course, bought one of her books to sign and wanted to give her another chance.

I think I figured out why she can be hit or miss with me.

Her characters are always great. Call Me Irresistible was no different. The sassy, witty Meg and the perfect, handsome Ted were well written. I loved the dialogue between them. The metaphors and wisecracks Meg made comparing Ted to Jesus was hilarious! The strong supporting characters (a lot of them from her previous books) were funny and made me want to check out their stories as well.

I think the problem I have is the 'ah-ha' moment. The moment in a romance novel were the hero and/or heroine figure out they love the other person and want to make it work. I feel that her 'ah-ha' moments are always not as well plotted out and come out forced.

This 'ah-ha' moment wasn't as bad as one of her other novel's was, but it was so-so.

I still like her and respect her as an author. I think her characters make it worth it, I just wish the plotting was a little better.

I think I expect too much from my romance novels.

Fun, lighthearted installment with typical scenarios etc. Francesca and Dallas from Fancy pants are in it, with Teddy being the main character.

This was the very first book of SEP that I've read and it does not disappoint. This book had me laughing and crying in every chapter. The romance and the friendships Meg makes throughout the book had me aching for my very own Texas boy and town. Now having read First Lady and Glitter Baby (both amazing books might I add, you should go over and read them if you haven't had the pleasure yet.) I can see how Ted and Meg both take after their parents and turn it around for themselves. This book has me in the feels from the very beginning, seeing in Meg's head after first being introduced to her in Glitter Baby and the snapshot we got of her in What I did for Love was a dream come true.

SEP brought forth almost every character we've grown to love in her other books and they fit perfectly in the town in Wynette, Texas. Seeing all of my favorite cowboys, including the love of my life Jake, all live the lives they swore would never happen was heartbreakingly beautiful. Although I may have a new favorite in sweet, selfless Ted. My favorite book in the whole series, this is the book I keep coming back to.

So this is one of my favorite SEP books. The contrast between Meg's quirky strength of character and heartrending vulnerability is what draws Ted to her. Despite his carefully constructed ideal of a suitable match, he falls for her. Despite her conviction that this straight laced golden boy is the last thing on earth she needs, she falls for him.

*** Book Q & A***

* How did the book make you feel?: This book was uplifting and highly entertaining.
* How do you feel about how the story was told?: SEP has this amazing ability to transport the reader into the setting. There was dry humor and a lot of details that make the story come to life.
* What did you think about the main characters?: The MC’s descriptions alone made me think I wouldn’t like them, but they were both so well-developed that it was easy to sympathize and root for both of them. The secondary characters were also well-developed.
* Which parts of the book stood out to you?: I liked how the h wasn’t satisfied with mechanical, yet skillful lovemaking because there was no passion behind it. This was an interesting facet of the story and an indication of how reserved the H was in all aspects.
* What themes/tropes did you detect in the story?: Enemies to lovers, abandoned groom at the alter, stealing your best friend’s man (best friend was okay with it)
* What did you think about the ending?: Loved the epilogue
* What is your impression of the author?: Every SEP book is magical, imho.

Memorable characters, Meg is genuinely funny, and her self-actualization is a pretty moving, effective spine to the story. Really intricately plotted! Too intricately plotted? 😅
