Noir fantasy with an unsympathetic gay protagonist. Starts off strong but loses steam midway, and the world isn't as well build as it could be. The constant stream of vulgarities is also jarring. Still, Morgan's prose is often well-crafted, and the novel is interesting and even original in a genre that's rarely innovative.

Weeeeee! Finally read The Steel Remains
Lots of hype amongst the grimdark community for this book. As far as grimdark, story plot and characters, this book is it. I just loved the whole craziness and brutality of it all. So why the bloody hell did this take me 11 days to read?
Richard K. Morgan just couldn't hold my attention well enough. Sad day when I’d rather play solitaire on my lunch break than read. But when this book had it, it was a good 5 star moments. Ringil is a character I will always remember. He’s going to stick to me. I’m already getting anxious to see what happens in the next book. But damn, that lag in the book makes me want to bring it down to 3 stars.
Bullwhack. I’m giving this 4 stars. The brutality and boundary pushing was worth it!

I really enjoyed the other books of Richard Morgan's that I've read, all of which were sci-fi rather than the epic fantasy he attempts here. I just couldn't get into this - I didn't like any of the main characters, I didn't enjoy the switches in view point, and I certainly wasn't intrigued enough to look forward to reading any more books in the trilogy.

I have loved Richard K Morgan's science fiction novels and when I heard that he was doing a fantasy book I got very excited . . . perhaps he could breath new life into a stale genre. And in many ways he did. The protagonist is surly, powerful, openly gay. The problem is mystical beings more legend than fact. And the solution is unorthodox . . . until the killing starts. It's fun, it's adventurous, and it's uncomfortable - everything I've come to expect from a Morgan thriller.

The main character is gay, but it's not his main personality trait which is fantastic.
The story, once you get into it, is okay, but it is confusing with all names for characters, places, things, and races. It is a fantasy world, so nothing is something I can relate to in order to remember who is whom and what is what. Took about half of the book until I had some control over who I was following of the three "POV" that was present in the book.

long and meandering beginning and i had a difficult time liking most of the characters. i'm more of a reader that enjoys characterizations, so these guys were just not it for me. It's also a little too gritty for my personal tastes.
