I love WH, but the people who don't like the characters are absolutely correct. The characters are terrible people! We aren't supposed to like them! This is not a romance novel, so if you expected that going in, I can totally understand feeling disappointed and/or revolted. The reason I like WH so much is because it's so gorram creepy. The atmosphere is creepy, the history is creepy, and Heathcliff is insane, obsessive, and massively creepy. I find it all incredibly sad and tragic. I should also mention that I loathe Jane Austen. Her books are so frivolous and privileged - WH is dark and disturbing, and the "romance" between, well, all of the couples, is possessive and twisted. I love how the novel simply drips with crazy. I love reading this book during autumn storms. Actually, I tend to read only a few chapters at a time during such storms, then put it aside and wait for the next storm. Nothing else compares to WH. It's in my top three favorite books of all-time.

A wild, passionate story of intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff.

First time reading a classic. I think this was quite a difficult one to start with, but I did end up enjoying it.
It was quite difficult for me to get into. It was also quite difficult to understand who was telling the story. First, there is Mr Lockwood who I think experiences something strange. Then the story is told from Ellen’s perspective, who is then the ‘I’ in the story.
I think that while it is interesting to see everything happen from Ellen’s point of view, it does also make me feel like I am missing a lot of the story. Are they really in love? When did they fall in love? What conversations have they had to have this happen? It sometimes just feel a bit sudden.
I just also feel the characters are not that nice.
Heathcliff suddenly disappearing, Catherine marrying someone just for his status, and then especially young Cathy. Ellen describes her as an angel, but she is honestly quite annoying. She then falls in love with Linton, who is the most annoying character ever, and they are so mean to Hareton, who is honestly the only nice one there.

Also, I just struggled a little bit with the language used. While part of me just needed to get used to it, when Joseph started talking, I just skipped those parts because I could not figure out what he was saying.
However, I was intrigued by the characters, what drove them to act, and how the story would end. So I did enjoy reading it.

I absolutely loved this book in all of its narcissistic glory. All of these characters deserved each other. Not one was not overly dramatic, self absorbed and cruel.

Years since I've read this and I still have not watched a movie version. Wuthering Heights is always lauded as a great love story, with Heathcliff the romantic interest. Now, as the last time I read it, I see only a disparate group of hateful, vengeful people led on an unmerry chase through life by the willful Catherine Earnshaw Linton, whose unthinking and childish manner continue to haunt events even after her death. The story I really want to know is where Heathcliff went for 3 yrs. Still, it is a good book despite its lack of redeeming characters.

Why does anyone like this book? How am I to believe that the narrator remembers exact conversations from 30 years ago? Rambling story, hateable, childish characters. Had I read the book instead of listening, I would have quit in the first few chapters. But the audio was, at least entertaining, despite the miserable story.
