Bár a sárkányos fantasy nem az én műfajom, sőt talán éppenséggel a legtávolabb áll tőlem meglepően megragadott a történet egy idő után, de hogy őszinte legyek az első 100-150 oldalt végigszenvedtem. Nem vagyok oda a túl lassú történetépítésért, mert még idő előtt elveszítem az érdeklődésemet és a történetet vontatottnak érzem miatta. Ennek ellenére Clay kalandja miatt maradtam. Az ő karaktere és cselekményszála volt a legérdekesebb mind közül. Lizanne karaktere nagyon nem nyert meg magának a könyv elején, látszik, hogy a nő férfi szemszögbél lett írva, és akkor nem is vagyok annyira gonosz. de aztán ahogy a tanoncával alakult a kapcsolata, megmutatta az emberi oldalát is, amitől már szimpatikusabbá vált és elvette karakterének nyers élét. Hilemore története unalmas volt, nem igazán érdekelt a sok tengerészeti duma, sem a hajózás, így az ő fejezetein szenvedtem a legtöbbet.
Tetszett a karakterek fejlődése; főként Clay-é, aki egy kisstílű tolvajból igazi hőssé vált a könyv végére, Lizanne is elfogadhatóbbá vált a szememben, illetve Tekela és Arberus is jelentős fejlődésen mentek keresztül a nagyobb jó érdekében, annak ellenére, hogy eredetileg teljesen ellentétes oldalon álltak a kémnővel szemben.
A történet lassú kibontakozású; az én ízlésemnek azért túlságosan is, ennek ellenére Ryan tökéletesen vezeti a cselekményszálakat, minden okkal történik és nem csellengünk céltalanul csak azért, hogy növeljük az oldalszámot.
A fordítás nem jó minőségű. Matolcsy Kálmán szerintem csapnivaló munkát végzett. Rengeteg az elírás és nem csak különféle szavaknál, hanem a könyv főszereplőinek nevében is! pl. Zedina a Zenida helyett, és hasonlók… Azért ez egy nagyon alapvető dolog, amire illik odafigyelni. Emellett sok a szóismétlés is, és sok helyen annyira magyartalan szerkezeteket használt, hogy nem is értettem mit olvasok, ez pedig számomra sokat hozzátesz a könyv élvezhetőségéhez is, ezért eléggé silánynak éreztem az egészet. Arról nem is beszélve, hogy a lektor hiánya ordít a szövegről hiába van megnevezve egy korrektor a könyv elején…
Első könyvhöz képest erős a története és megragadja az olvasó figyelmét. Kissé nehéz dolgom volt, mivel a párom kedvenc könyvsorozatáról van szó, aminek olvasását már egy ideje megígértem neki, és bár döcögős volt a kezdet, szépen kikerekedett a történet, sőt megkockáztatom, hogy valamikor a jövőben még folytatni is fogom a sorozatot, amikor már nem lesz ennyi előre betervezett olvasmányom mint most. :)

Avontuurlijk en spannend eerste deel van een trilogie over een continent waar sommige inwoners z.g. bloedgezegenden zijn, wat zoveel wil zeggen dat ze met het bloed van draken (rode, groene, blauwe en zwarte) speciale extra krachten hebben.
In drie verhaallijnen worden afwisselend de belevenissen gevolgd van
■ Lizanne Letriet, geregistreerd bloedgezegende en lid van de Arradsiaanse Uitzonderlijke Initiatievendivisie onder contract van het IJzerschip Handelssyndicaat, die er door haar mentor als spion en undercoveragent op uit wordt gestuurd naar een enclave van het Corvantijns keizerrijk aan de noordkust van Arradsia om informatie te achterhalen over een mysterieus antiek astrologisch mechanisme dat aanwijzingen zou bevatten voor het vinden van de mythologische Witte Draak
■ Cleemond Torkreek, een ongeregistreerd bloedgezegende kleine crimineel, die door zijn oom Braddon uit de gevangenis wordt gehaald om deel te nemen aan een door het IJzerschip Handelssyndicaat georganiseerde geheime expeditie op zoek naar de Witte Draak
■ Corrin Heilmoer, die als tweede luitenant inscheept aan boord van het IJzerschip Protectoraatsschip Veelbelovende Onderneming, een z.g. bloedbrander (pas rigoureus omgebouwd met een experimentele nieuwe thermoplasmische bloedbrander-aandrijving) onder commando van kapitein Wulfcot Truman, die als missie krijgt de Korf te veroveren, een piratennest aan de hoefijzervormige baai van een van de duizenden eilandjes die de noordoostelijke kant van de Barrière-eilanden vormen
Het boek telt bijna 650 pagina's maar leest vlot weg.

Disappointment
I think this book was just plain ole bad juju for me. More than a story, it is a representation of how I let a toxic person ruin a good group and book for me.
It was a struggle for me to read this, but I made it. Time to close this chapter.

I tried. I really did, but the whole time I just didn’t care about anything. I pressed on because what happened in the story was exciting enough. Naval battles, spy’s, quests, and superhuman powers gained by ingesting Dragon blood. That sounds pretty cool! I had hoped that I’d get into some of the characters eventually.
Ultimately though, I think that because it keeps on switching between three protagonists, I was unable to really settle into any of them. So, once I got about half way, I just realized that it’s highly unlikely the last half will be any different.

The Waking Fire is the first book I've read by Anthony Ryan and I must say that I really enjoyed it. The world building was good and the magic system was interesting. It reminded me a bit of Mistborn with the whole ingesting a substance to gain the magical ability thing. I liked the combination of magic and steam with guns thrown in as well, and of course the dragons. It kind of had an old west feel to it at times.
The book is broken down into three different character points of view, and it alternated between them with each chapter. One thing I really liked were the cliff hangers at the end of a lot of them. It really kept me reading. There were a couple of times that I just had to skip ahead to see what happened next!
I found most of the characters interesting with Clay being my favorite. Lizanne and Hilemore were also both likable. Although I enjoyed reading about Hilemore's adventures just as much as Clay's and Lizanne's, we didn't get as much of Hilemore and it wasn't clear until well into the book what sort of role he would play in the grand scheme of things.
I would say the only draw backs were the book lagged in parts and also lacked a bit in character development. I still don't really feel like I know most of the characters as well as I would like to. Also about the character Silverpin...
I'm interested in finding out what happens next so I will be looking forward to reading more books in the series.

I didn't find the explanation for what she did and why she did it to be very clear. She was chosen by the White because she was special just doesn't cut it for me. We needed more development there.I'm interested in finding out what happens next so I will be looking forward to reading more books in the series.
