Another of my top 5 of what I've read this year.
This made me feel like I was living the experiences the grace year girls did. It felt wild and confusing and yet the exploration of self and the strength that comes with helping each other (specifically women helping women) was beautiful.

It was a tough read. By that I mean these girls go through hell and it feels like you're there with them. I liked the ending, though it left me with complicated feelings.

More thoughts on the ending:
Spoiler To explain more, I felt weird that her plan for a huge independent statement at the end gets derailed because of a baby. Especially since the importance of the baby first comes across as only important because its *HIS* baby. But I like the importance of having a girl. I also like that it doesn't tie everything up in a neat little bow. She doesn't overthrow the entire government in one year, she is just one of many women working to make their world better where they can even when it seems impossible. That ending meant a lot to me.

There were some things I didn't love about it, but it was complicated and made me feel a lot of feelings and I've been thinking of it ever since. So 5 stars.

SpoilerI was not prepared to like this book as much as I did, but now I’m so glad I gave it a chance. The beginning was a bit slow, but about a quarter of the way through I was engrossed in it until the end. I felt some of the storyline to be predictable but I was definitely not expecting that ending! I also felt a bit disappointed at first that this could become a romantic story; I viewed Tierney as too independent to fall for a man. But as hers and Ryker’s love grew, I found myself rooting for them and then in tears at the demise. I’m really hoping for a sequel!

Breakdown: Honestly, I wanted to give up on this book at only 10% in because the misogyny made me genuinely so angry that it made it really hard to continue. I was also very mad at how the book ended (considering adding this as an extra value). Like, the plot twists were interesting, but knowing the vibe of the book they were kinda predictable.
Spoiler Like him dying was very obvious but the baby was completely unexpected. Her best friend marrying her was expected, but not him pretending to be the father of the baby. I still have no idea how smallpox really plays into the book but that's neither here nor there because I do get it, but I'm not sure it was the best way to push that point home. Also, Hanz was completely out of the blue and I loved that plot twist. I wish that the book went more into the rebellion but unfortunately, now it is only up to my imagination.
I also think she spent way too much time with Ryker but that is also neither here nor there. Wonderful world-building but not seen through to it's full potential.
