Alexia and her silver-tipped parasol have been on my tbr for ages, and I'm so glad I've finally ripped off the brown paper wrapping. I adore standalone romances, but even those with beautifully interwoven series structures that keep you skipping from book to book lack that single narrative voice. And that single, in this case indomitable, voice is sometimes the key to a series being the ultimate comfort read. Not that there aren't plenty of hair-raising and flesh-creeping moments in Soulless, but you know to back Alexia and her parasol. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

I suppose I’m at the point in my life that if a book doesn’t immediately suck me in, I can’t give it more than 3 stars. Though, if it were possible on this site I would probably bump it up to a 3.5 as I found myself enjoying the second half of the book much more than the first.

I think my main issue has to do with the main character who first suffers from that tired trope of complaining that she’s not pretty enough when, in fact, she’s gorgeous and the male lead is already very much in love with her. Second, I agree with other reviews that at least at the start of this story, the lead is not very nice. I think the author was trying to illustrate that she’s more at home among werewolves and vampires, because it’s when she starts interacting with them that she becomes more tolerable, but it took a long while for me to warm up to the character.

That said, while I wouldn’t say this is the best Victorian fantasy read I’ve ever crossed, it’s certainly embraces the camp and fun of vampires and werewolves and if you’re looking for a fun adventure story, I’d say pick it up. Though it was a slow start for me, I’d be willing to check out the next book to see if there are improvements to the story overall.

3.5 stars. My thoughts on this book varied a lot. I do enjoy her writing style; she puts a lot of detail on clothing and food, which helps create an atmosphere. I’m really not a romance fan, so I prefer the Finishing School books to this, but it really did grow on me. Even the romance and passion portions were tolerable, and it still had twists and turns, and unexpected storyline advances. A bit silly, but not horrible.

I very much enjoyed it, but I don't feel interested enough to continue with this series.

I read this ages ago and loved it at the time. Now, I want to rest of the books in the series and so I took a refresher and, I still love this just as much as the first time.

This is probably worth 4 stars at least in terms of quality. I'm taking away .25 stars because of the overly cliche romance. There's nothing wrong with it if it's your thing, it's just not my thing. And this book doesn't seem at all concerned with avoiding tropes; it embraces them for the sheer fun of it, which is why is such a small decrease.

But this book is definitely funny. It was nice to read something playful, especially since I've been dipping my toes into scarier things more recently.

I enjoyed this story of a Woman who is "soulless", or Peternatual, her name is Alexia Tarabotti and she can neutralise the power of any vampire or werewolf. She accidentally kills a rude vampire who attacks her at a ball and finds herself involved in an investigation about the disappearance of supernatural creatures and Lord Maccon.

She's smart, unfashionably italian looking and regarded as a spinster but she's a great character and she does think logically.

I found this a fun read and enjoyed it immensely, I will have to get a copy for my library and look forward to reading the sequel
