THIS WAS SO FUN

Scooby Doo meets Evil Dead with strong Stranger Things vibes, and really amazing writing and lovely characters. I wasn't expecting to find so many sweet moments, meaningful friendships, and some nice anti-lovecraft social commentary in this little horror/mystery but DAMN it delivered. Also enjoyed the funny little fourth-wall-breaking quips.

Points off because sometimes the action was hard to follow

This probably deserves more like 3.5 stars, but it's definitely entertaining and I love the teen detective meets HP Lovecraft concept.

This book read like the movie Cooties, mixed with Scooby-Doo, as the title implies, and a little bit Knight of Badassdom. Completely far-fetched, very funny, genuinely scary, and sort of disgusting. The writing style was clever and fun, very self-aware. There were some uncomfortable moments, as well, so it's definitely not for everyone. But I couldn't put it down.

This book begins with a prisoner being released on parole. He is one of the costumed villains the title characters sent to jail. We learn right away he may not have been guilty of his crime. The kids were adolescence when they solved mysteries over the summers with their Weimaraner. Now it is 1990 and they are in their mid twenties. The innocence and idealism of their youth has been replaced with hardness and and listlessness. This book is based on a fun premise of what happens to the "Scooby Doo" gang when they are older. However the dialog is awkward and the plot is weak. The author is too profuse with adjectives and profanity. More editing may have improved it. The characters are unbelievable even for fantasy/horror book standards.

For an adult book, it does occasionally feel like a YA novel. Occasionally the narrative style can be repetitive or jarring but overall not a deal breaker.

HBO should have adapted this book over making Velma.
