Very uninspired and conventional, and I don't particularly enjoy reading about a grown man horning after teenage girls.

It's been a long time since I've felt so relieved to be finished with a book! This was the most boring and irritating read I've encountered in a really long time. I would have abandoned it except it meets two of my reading challenges and I want to be able to say I've read all the Brontes.
Before I started reading the book, I wrote this: "I've always had a negative impression of CB… I think it’s Elizabeth Gaskell’s fault. I try to give her the benefit of the doubt but can’t seem to shake it. Somebody make me like her!!!

2 stars because Charlotte Brontë writes beautifully, .5 star because Hundsen is a fantastic character, and .5 star because Frances is lovely.
But the protagonist is absolutely unbearable. His Lolita-esque narration made me wonder on multiple occasions if he was supposed to be the villain. He is chauvinistic, xenophobic, and has an incredibly holier-than-thou attitude about everything. He talks shit about everyone except Frances (and still isnt even that nice to her), and makes many many weird comments about his pupils, and we just have to sit in his head and endure it. Worse, he is boring. His thoughts are not only insulting, but bland.
The story ended well, but the beginning and middle were awful just because William is the main character. Would have much preferred it from any other perspective.

The main character is awful but doesn't seem to know it. Miserable and tedious.
