“In our neighborhood, the problem wasn’t the person who made the mistake; it was the person who acknowledged the truth.”

I’m unsure how The Quarry Girls ended up in my library, I assume via a daily deal but wow I am glad it did. The story follows the life of Heather Cash, a teen in a small town rife with shady characters and suspicious events that lead to the disappearance of Beth and two other central characters.

The people in power seem to disregard the current events until it seems like their activities may end up tangled in this very twisted web. Heather stands her own during this tale and since it was inspired by true events I felt my stomach churning at times, particularly with some of the reveals within.

I’m looking forward to reading more of the author’s work that’s certain.

Imagine your childhood neighborhood is connected by a series of tunnels that allow for group games of hide-and-seek and flashlight tag. But then one time you open a door, one you know you probably shouldn’t, and within its shadows you glimpse something that changes everything. You cannot unsee it, and so sets forth a series of crimes and cover-ups that makes friends seem like strangers, family as possible foe…and you learn perhaps your close-knit community hides its share of secrets down there in the dark.

This thriller perfectly coalesces innocence lost amidst the bonds of childhood friendship as it transitions to the tangles of teenage troubles and dreams, when some ties start to slowly shatter and scatter their separate ways. There’s real trauma written here that some readers may find hard to endure, but there’s also a fierce grit and determination within the female characters that speaks to their abilities to survive and fight for hard truths.

If you’re a fan of Lisa Jewell or Claire Douglas, this is a must-read!

This book was a rough start for me. It was confusing at first. But once I got going I couldn't put it down. The twist and turns at every corner kept me wondering, and when I thought I figured it out here would come another twist. Towards the end the pieces fall into place.

Just when I thought I knew who was bad someone else popped up that was horrible.
