Fantastic play and a really nice overview of the Joan of Arc story. Some great monologues, strong and witty writing, and perfectly paced in its structure and dramatic reveals. Also, a really nice counter-point to Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part One - Like getting to see the action from the other side of the narrative.

I had to read this book for class, but I read it within five days despite having two weeks (partly because I thought I only had one week, but mostly) because of how unbelievably good it was. It's funny, actually a page-turner, and really made me think. It's like the better Candide.

This is as much a warm, frank, sometimes-funny, always efficient biographical drama as it is a social critique wrapped up in the twin formats of essay and play, and it excels at both. Shaw is a killer writer and I'm glad to have dipped a toe back into his body of work - especially, serendipitously, in the month that ends with celebrating her canonization!

I enjoyed this retelling of the story of Joan of Arc. I think what makes it stand out is that Joan is and her judges are viewed as real human beings each making the case that they are just in what they are doing. I recommend.
