I can’t say I came away from this with a very strong grasp on what existentialism is (but maybe that’s the point??). I did enjoy learning about all of the different “characters” and personalities and how their lives and philosophies fit in history.

this was a great book although i warn people who want to attempt it not to get it in audiobook form unless you want to be stopping in the street to take notes every 5 seconds to make sure you grasp the concepts. a nice pop phil introduction to the main ideas of existentialism while blended with the biographical. apologies to everyone who had to deal with my fluctuating philosophical positions every chapter of this book, but i have now settled on the fact Merleau-Ponty had it right.

damn. did not think a biography of a group of philosophers would make me CRY. I got so unexpectedly emotional during that last chapter about the ends of their lives :(( this book is phenomenal (ha) and I wish I had read it two years ago when I was hopelessly lost in a twentieth-century philosophy of dissent class.

This felt like a long philosophy class and I loved every second of it.
