Too unrealistic, both in regards to the plot, character, and dialogue.

Wow, what a journey. Donna Tartt is a master of exposition: even though the places in the book are well-known and (in the case of New York) maybe too often featured in pop culture, she captures facets of them that feel fresh and different and describes them in a way that really, actually, made me feel like I was there. Theo’s first-person narrative of his life drew me in from page one, and by the end he felt like someone I’d known my whole life.

This book is, to me, a great example of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts – some of the chapters rambled on a bit, making me wonder where they were going, but together, they create an awe-inspiring story that will stay with me for a long time.

This was an excellent book. It read like Pinocchio. A boy lost and wandering through different places. I thought that it really gave a good description of grief, the main character missing his mom and just a place to belong. I have to admit that I kept waiting for the happy ending. It was hard at times to be mired in the tragedy. I did think that the ending was too drawn out, it definitely could have been shortened. I just started to skim at the very end of the book.

At times I loved this book and couldn't put it down, while at others it just seemed to drag on and on.

Hard to review this book. I loved it for ages and ages and went through a phase in the middle where I didn’t want it to end. But then it somehow lost its magic and refused to end and went on and on. The ending left me feeling unsatisfied too. Beautifully written though, and I definitely will give the film a go.

I listened to this book which I’ve since found out is 800 pages (equating to 32 hours of listening!) and I feel as though I’ve just listened to a 32 hour long poem. The writing is so sumptuous. There is a lot of plot, a lot of description and a lot of heart.
There are themes of value, loss of innocence and beauty all spilling out of this page-turning tale. I highly recommend this book. I know it can be divisive, but it’s worth a shot, even if just for the delightful writing.
