This is one of those non-fiction books that has a message that is both super obvious and not followed by most people. It came to me at a time when I really needed it. The message is essentially, make a habit of writing and it will help you process (or metabolize, to use the author’s metaphor) your life. There are good tips, persuasive rationale for the advice and it generally felt less repetitive to me than most of these kinds of self-help ish non-fiction. The author is indeed, a great writer and clearly edited her work to keep the reader’s attention.

This is such a great treatise on beginning a writing practice for your mental health. One concept she addressed was the idea of how your mind is spending a lot of effort holding secrets you don’t feel comfortable sharing from out of your past. And oftentimes you have some wisdom that’s been planted in the midst of those circumstances that can be uncovered when you write it down. She begins by covering different techniques (all approachable and non scientific), for the way the writing helps us process, heal, and grow, and winds out the book with what to consider in sharing your words with others via publishing.

For such a simple habit it has so many words. Much of it is vignettes about people employing her techniques to wonderful change in their lives. Every point has a random, loosely connected story. It was hard to care, and I kept skimming to find the meat of what she wants me to do.
