You don't pass or fail at being a person, dear A strange fairy tale-esque tale that lost me in the middle for a bit but has found its way back by the end. Gaiman can be a hit or a miss, this one was sort of in-between.

I thought this was so good, the narration and voice was so convincing and the world gaiman created was so vivid and real and magical, I would recommend the audiobook because I liked hearing gaiman’s voice on his own words

You know, despite reading the summary listed here on Goodreads, I really had no idea what I was getting when sitting down to this book. It's a bit more magic realism than I prefer honestly, but that doesn't make it bad or poorly written - just not my thing.
What I DID appreciate, and hence the 3 stars, was the beautiful imagination/childhood depictions of life, playing, introspecting, and my personal favorite, kittens.
Seriously. The way Neil Gaiman described kittens (and there are multiple cats in this book) made my icy heart melt and, despite already have two cats, tempted me to go adopt another one or twenty. In that regard I'm glad that I'm done with this, because otherwise I'm starting my cat-lady career way too early!

“Books were safer than other people anyway.”
“Words save our lives, sometimes.”
“Adults follow paths. Children explore. Adults are content to walk the same way, hundreds of times, or thousands; perhaps it never occurs to adults to step off the paths, to creep beneath rhododendrons, to find the spaces between fences.”

The Ocean at the End of the Lane is honestly one of the best books I have ever read. It was thoughtful, whimsical, and had just the right little touch of fright. The writing was also just lovely; consistently poetic but never trying too hard to be so. The characters themselves were written perfectly. There was enough shared about them that you cared for them, but still enough mystery that you wished to know more. However, at the same time, you don't need to know anything more.
This especially goes for the female characters. While the narrator was male, nearly every other character was feminine, which is something rarely found in books anymore. In this case, both the villains and the heroines were women, which was both profoundly interesting and inspiring.
I thank Neil Gaiman for his incredible addition to literature, and I recommend this book to anyone.

a re-read of a long-time favorite. just as bizarre, fantastic, mysterious, and inexplicable as i remembered -- all materialized in a deep indigo haze. neil gaiman is just a marvel.
