Persis Wadia, India's first female detective inspector back in 1950s Bombay has a tricky case on her hands when an old and very rare copy of Dante's Inferno disappears, as does the Englishman who had been researching it. Perceptive and intuitive, she makes life difficult for herself by her own prickly and easy-to-take-offence character. Twists, turns, another unexpectedly connected case, and her awkward relationships with colleagues, especially the Englishman Archie Blackfinch make for another gripping yarn from Malabar House.

Interesting and detailed mystery for the second book in the series - ones like this (or the Da Vinci Code) do rely on a certain suspension of belief that the characters just happen to know people who can help them solve things… Persis’ father having a well stocked bookshop, knowing a military historian. Fernandes knowing the saints’ names, etc.

But - this was a good story, tied together well and carefully plotted out. Good second story in the Persis series.

Much like the first book in the series, I enjoyed the increase in character building (fleshing out the main characters even more), the atmospheric historical setting, the clever and talented interweaving of historical details into the background of the book and the main plot, and the main mystery. My major qualm is the mystery seemed next to impossible to solve given the details provided the reader in the first 80% of the book. I also think there were a few plot contrivances that went too far, which even go beyond willful suspension of disbelief. This causes the book to lose verisimilitude near the end. But overall, this was still a very enjoyable read. 4 stars.
