garbutch's review against another edition
I've been meaning to read Langston Hughes for a while as-is. I'm always afraid someone's poetry may not be my style, but I saw someone post one of his poems on Instagram and it was excellent.
This was a really short read, available on Scribd. Many of these poems could be songs and I wish I could hear them like that. Some are love poems, some are about death, the sea, a lot about Harlem at this time and its atmosphere.
Jazz and hope.
I'm going to share a couple favourites.
To a Black Dancer in "The Little Savoy"
Wine-maiden
Of the jazz-tuned night,
Lips
Sweet as purple dew,
Breasts
Like the pillows of all sweet dreams,
Who crushed
The grapes of joy
And dropped their juice
On you?
The Dream Keeper
Bring me all of your dreams,
You dreamers.
Bring me all of your
Heart melodies
That I may wrap them
In a blue cloud-cloth
Away from the too rough fingers
Of the world.

vulturetime's review against another edition
Not going to rate this because my personal enjoyment level conflicts with the level of meaning that is present and that I get (it'd be like a 3 vs 4.25 stars, I'm not saying that I didn't like this collection). I personally like poetry to be more descriptive or about more abstract things. Hughes has quite a few poems here that are just portraits of people and life, which has a lot of meaning, but doesn't personally do it for me. I would love to hear the poems in a song because they sound so nice too.
My favorite poems here: "Cabaret," "Dream Variation," "Fantasy in Purple," "Beggar Boy," "Suicide's Note," "Poem (To F.S.)," and "Epilogue." Honorary mention to "Cross."
