This book was a waste of my time.

First up, the writing style annoyed me. These kids are meant to be seventeen right, not 30? THEN GODDAMN MAKE THEM SOUND 17!!! And they are all meant to be separate characters with their own voices? THEN DON'T MAKE THEM ALL SOUND THE SAME! The only character who had the slightest difference in character voice was Mr. Einstein at the end. Literally the only one.

Then there was all this love triangle shit, and seriously, Jost pissed me off big time! And he doesn't even sound like an eighteen year old father, wanting to do best but struggling at it. Nope he sounds like he's 30!!!! Seriously, Albin needs to learn to write YA properly.

Things went all over the place, with boring stuff taking up like a full chapter, and all the good stuff crammed into a few paras. Needless to say, there were a great many times where I was just reading dialogue. And even then I was skimming.

I don't even want to talk about this anymore. I was interested in finding the ending so I read up on the spoilers of the next book and - lo and behold - even that couldn't interest me in reading the final installment.

I actually regret spending my hard earned moolah on this book. ALtered made me want to throw it across the room. or ALTER it so that it has more pizzaz! HA! HA HA HA! *frustrated laughter* I do NOT recommend this book.

Eye-roll at the stupid love triangle.
Eye-roll at the Einstein cameo.
Eye-roll at the stupid way
Spoiler she just assumed her sister was safe, after sacrificing herself, only to find out that it was a wasted effort since Amy still ended up being used as bait

Albin owes me a shit ton of Asprin...

***3.5 STARS***

I really enjoyed Crewel so I was really excited to dive into the sequel. Altered started out right where we left off in Crewel but for most of the book things were really slow and it didn't seem like much was happening. When we got 'answers' it just lead to a new set of questions. Also, this book focused way more on the love-triangle, angsty moments at very inappropriate moments. The later half of the book was more action packed and things started to tie together, ending with a cliff hanger leaving me anxious for the last book in this trilogy.

Interesting. I didn't care much for Crewel, but the premise interested me and I wanted to see where it was going. Altered continues with this very cool concept-- being able to play with strands of time. I also appreciated the thoughtful world-building here. Much like Allegiant, Altered finds its characters newly released into a previously unknown world. However, where Allegiant totally dropped the ball, Altered actually explores the world, its inhabitants, and the way it runs. Both stories also involve some crazy talk about genes, and I was rolling my eyes when I hit this point in Altered. I was prepared for the worst, but this book did a far better job of constructing somewhat plausible, interesting, and brief scientific explanations than the atrocity that is Allegiant.

However, there was a lot about this book that I didn't care for, unfortunately. The characters. They explicitly overreacted to the smallest things, instead of letting the reader pick up on subtleties. As a result, they came off as cartoonish, and their dialogue was all very forced. They didn't feel like real people and I didn't connect to any of them. The arguments came out of nowhere every single time, existing only to create drama where there was no reason for it. (Spoilers) I was still trying to process what exactly broke Adelice and Jost up chapters after it happened. That kind of issue is something that should be discussed at great length, not pulled out of thin air in the form of an accusation. I understand that these kids are young, and maybe this was a way of showing their immaturity, but it didn't make any sense. They were very serious about each other, and the idea of becoming family deserved a long, rational conversation. Instead, it was used as a way to cut Adelice free and push her to Erik. This is one of my main issues with love triangles. These couples aren't required to work through their issues. At the slightest provocation, they can just run to the waiting arms of Mr. Perfect #2. Ugh.

A good chunk of this book was just plain confusing. I thought this was a futuristic sci-fi story, but suddenly we're talking Hitler and Einstein and we're sitting in a speakeasy. What is happening? At one point, leather pants with laces up the sides were described as "practical". I'm just so confused. And I'm sorry, but when Adelice says, "Remember who you are", I heard Mufasa and then I couldn't take anything seriously.

I am interested enough to see how things end up, so I'm sure I will pick up the next installment. I just don't know what to do with this.
