i’m not sure what trope the author had in mind while writing this, but if it was anything close to enemies to lovers, she failed. this is kind of like a bully to lover type of trope (if there is anything of this kind). the book is like a 2013 harry styles bad boy fanfic, but not in a good way and more in a badly written, annoying characters way. i definitely can’t say that i loved it but i guess it wasn’t absolutely terrible. this back and forth between macon and lennon was so annoying because we didn’t even get two chapters before they were fighting again or messing things up. i truly despised claire throughout the book because to me it seemed like lennon was just someone she could use as her personal babydoll to control and have do things for her own benefit. macon was a dick most of the book, even after he was all in love and obsessed with lennon (which to be honest i don’t understand because he was still mean to her). lennon’s dad is also extremely annoying because this girl is traumatised after what happened to her mom but he still kind of emotionally neglects her. did i love this book? no. will i read the sequel? absolutely.

p.s. for like the first 100 pages i kept pronouncing macon like bacon in my mind and then settled for mason (btw i JUST found out that it is indeed pronounced like bacon so i’ll add andrea to the list of characters i hate because WHY would you name your kid that)

i went into this book because the blurb said that it wouldn’t end in an HEA and i read so many reviews saying they were shattered. Though i enjoy the story, (well not that specific trope though i hate this trop) i was a bit disappointed because i somehow was expecting more… then again i always have a hard time reading about high schoolers cause it’s usually full of teenagers angst and toxicity and that’s what we got here… i’m still planning on reading book 2 because i do want to know how it ends and i want to see that HEA !!! but that won’t happen right away tbh.
also is there a Claire hate account somewhere that i can’t follow? cause yeah, i hate her.

I absolutely adored the story of Macon and Lennon, two of the most angstiest couples I’ve ever read about. The tropes of this book got me.

Best friends brother ✅
Stepbrother ✅
Angst/growing pains ✅
Toxic love ✅
Enemies to lovers ✅

All of these tropes came alive in the book and I fell so hard for them both. I loved how despite Macon being portrayed as this messy, guy who likes to get high and fuck actually has so much depth to him, he wants to protect his sister and mother from their abusive dad, he’s so talented at art and drawing, he spends his time working at a recreational Center with kids, Macon may have a hard exterior but for Lennon he opened up so much.

I loved how Lennon started off as this shy kind of girl who sort of let people bulldoze over her including her best friend Claire and people that hate her such as Sam (Macon’s on/off friends with benefits) and Macon himself. But with Macon challenging her and as Lennon grew into her own person she started to stand up for herself.

The way their relationship developed was so amazing to see, they’ve both circled around eachother quietly for so long and when they exploded it was fire. Their chemistry and smut were

CALL ME CRAZY, but I freaking love a good toxic, bully romance. I will put up with so much more in books than I ever would in real life. I devoured this book. I LOVE Macon. I will say this book plays big on this miscommunication trope BUT it’s the one I love to hate. It makes me so mad but damn does it keep me reading. The smut was excellent, the CLIFFHANGER……don’t even talk to me. I cannot wait to get my hands on the second book.

Edit to add: this is set in high school with ranges from 17-19. I age them up in my head like I do with most books that have characters than me.

This book! Man there is so much love and heartbreak in one story. I binged this book so hard.
Best friends brother, enemies to lovers with a touch of overly dramatic bullying? Yes please.
I loved the tension that Brit displayed with these two characters. With all the push she gave us even more pull. These two were tethered together and it was glorious.

To show such a wide range of emotions in two pretty young characters has got to be tough but Brit did this with grace - While they weren't fully mature adults, there wasn't an a sense of being overly immature either.

Lennon - is your girl next door with a little bit of sass and a lot of backbone. I loved her strength, her bravery and the overall love that she displayed for everyone close to her. Lennon carried a lot of secrets that in the end were a little more damaging to herself, to protect those around her. She was so selfless and it was easy to fall in love with her. Lidia Dornet narrates the part of Lennon and I don’t think I could have hand picked anyone better for her. Lidia was the perfect Lennon and she completely stole my heart.

Oh Macon - this dark cloud with a heart of gold. When I first met Macon, I thought I had him pegged. I was certain he was just going to be your typical high school bully with very little purpose. Brit, had me fooled 100%. Macon had so much love in his heart, he was soulful and beautiful deep in there, he was just lost and needed help finding his way. JF Harding was the perfect Macon. He was angsty, he was hurt and he gave such a stellar emotional performance.

They both had their issues and thats what I felt like we needed to see. A lot of the times in these younger/ bully type books they always focus on the bullies issues - Brit gave us all the good and the dirty with these two.

The side characters were great as well! Stunning story telling!
