This was a story about the friendship of four girls, and how one night and one tragedy can fracture something so valuable. When one horrific night happens each of the ladies deal with it in their own way each one has a certain amount of guilt and they question many things about their life. When that one incident also tears apart some of the friendships, your left wondering what the real underlying cause was. This is a story about four women who intended to be lifelong friends, finding their way back to each other, and realizing that sometimes love just isn’t enough. Each of these women are broken in their own way, and when they are brought back together 12 years later for a weekend, you get to see that true friendships help fix the cracks and brokenness of the other people that she once cared about and loved. I thought that the author did an excellent job of writing the story, and letting you get perspective from each character, I strongly felt that I was each character throughout their journey.

Just ok. I felt like it left too many storylines still open.

*sigh* Ok, here’s the deal. The overarching story was fine, good even. But the thing that made this difficult to trudge through was the OVER describing of things. What do I mean? Remember when we were in school and our English teachers said that we need to “show not tell” and be descriptive in order to paint a picture in the readers mind? Well this did it waaaay too much at times in the parts that it didn’t need it and then lacked in others. For example, there was very little description of what the girls actually looked like. Maybe some hair colors but that was about it. I had a hard time picturing what these characters were supposed to look like. Yet on the other hand, when talking about grief it would over describe to the point of making it boring. I am not a skimmer and I found myself skimming larger parts of chapters to get back to the main point of the story.

I was expecting some young adult topics here, because of the beach vibes and everything.  Instead it's more like a delayed coming-of-age facing responsibilities and trauma from one chance dangerous encounter
with meth heads
.

The description of the book basically covers it all.  Four girls, four best friends, form a family of their own because their actual homelives are messy.  Another great summer at Montauk by the beach, with cute guys and parties to celebrate their last hurrah before college.  We revisit them twelve years in the future, when the actual book takes place.

It's mainly more a reflective introspective piece for each of the characters to go through a mini self-discovery journey about their flaws that are preventing them from finding peace, happiness, and fulfillment in their lives.  It reminds me of a book I might have read in American Lit or AP English Lit, because a large part of the theme is growing up and facing adulthood, and overcoming trauma.

I have never been more confused by a low rating for a book. This isn't one of those weird books that I love because I am weird. This is a beautiful book and an easy 5 stars. Tense, emotional, with gorgeous, evocative writing and characters I felt like I got to know. I was so invested by the end. And the ✨vibes✨ If you want a book with immaculate summer beach read vibes that's also emotional and gripping, this is your perfect read!

i did not enjoy this very much. the writing was over-the-top and downright... confusing. i love a good metaphor, love a good simile, but i feel like the author wrote them by throwing darts at a dictionary or something.

there are also only so many times you can lead your reader down a path with "that fateful night... what happened that changed everything... all those years ago..." etc etc etc before it becomes tiresome.
